India vs South Africa: Shafali Verma-led India’s U-19 women’s team locked horns with South Africa in the inaugural match of Women's U-19 T20 World Cup on Saturday, January 14, at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. India's U-19 T20 World Cup squad are off to a great start in the tournament as they defeated Proteas by chasing down the 167-run target in 16.3 overs after losing only three wickets.
India captain Shifali Verma, in her team’s first Group D match, hammered 45 runs off just 16 balls with help of nine fours and one six. During her innings, the 18-year-old hit five boundaries and a lone six in just one over itself, bowled by South African cricketer Ntabiseng Nini.
Shafali is one of the key players in this junior tournament as she has the experience of playing for the senior team at the highest level.
India defeated South Africa by 7 wickets to make a winning start to their 2023 Women's Under-19 World Cup campaign. Batting first, South Africa posted a target of 167 runs. In reply, India registered a resounding victory by chasing down the target in just 16.3 overs.
For India, Shweta Sehrawat played an unbeaten inning of 92 runs, while Shafali Verma contributed to the team's win with a stormy inning of 45 runs. Also, Shafali bagged 2 wickets, while Sonam Yadav and Parshvi took a wicket apiece.
