Senegal defeated Egypt 4-2 on penalties and created history at the final of the Africa Cup of Nations 2021. This is Senegal's first AFCON title. The match lay in balance at 0-0 after 90 minutes + extra time as both teams failed to score.

Then came the penalties where Sadio Mane, who had missed the penalty in the seventh minute scored his kick to seal the first AFCON title for the Senegalese.

Unfortunately for Egypt, Mohammed Salah could not take his penalty as he was the fifth penalty-taker and the penalties were over for the Pharos after four kicks. They could not extend their record by winning the eighth AFCON title.

"That is why your best penalty taker should never go fifth. Mo Salah not taking a penalty for Egypt in a shootout in a final is madness. Also happened to Ronaldo years ago for Portugal v Spain," said Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender.

Senegal were Champions after losing two finals. Sadio Mane won the player of the tournament award while Mendy won the goal-keeper of the tournament award.
