Rajya Sabha congratulated boxers Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain, Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora for scripting history by winning four gold medals at the recently concluded Women's World Boxing Championships in New Delhi.
"I have a pleasant news to share. This is a proud moment for all of us. Our women boxers have created history in the Women's World Boxing Championship held in New Delhi from March 15-26 by winning four gold medals,'' Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Of India Jagdeep Dhankhar said as the House met on Tuesday.
''Our congratulations to Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain, Nitu Ghanghas, and Saweety Boora. Their outstanding accomplishments will stir India's future to great hights, inspiring and motivating the young aspiring athletes,'' he added.
The upper house of the bicameral Parliament of India also congratulated the coaches and the support staff of the winning boxers.
While Ghanghas bagged the gold in the minimum weight category (48 kg), Nikhat clinched her second successive world championship title this around in the 50 kg category. Lovlina Borgohain ensured a top finish at the podium in the 75 kg category while Saweety Boora struck gold in the 81 kg category to bag the fourth and the final gold medal for India.
Nikhat's achievement was all the more special as she became only the second Indian boxer after MC Mary Kom to win more than one gold medal at the World Championships. Overall, India have won a total of 14 gold medals in the Women's World Boxing Championships with Mary Kom bagging 6 gold medals alone. However, the four gold meadals by India in this edition now means that the others combined have surpassed Mary Kom's enviable tally.
Ever since the boxers' success, congraulatory messages and wishes for them have been pouring in from all quarters. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah led the way in congratulating to the gold medal-winning pugilists.
