Agartala (Tripura) [India], Jul 9 (ANI): The family members of gymnast Dipa Karmakar, who won gold medal in the vault event at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Challenge Cup on Sunday, expressed happiness over the latter's achievements.
Dipa's father Dulal Karmakar, a weightlifting coach, said that this was the first her competition after surgery.
"I got this information from Dipa's first coach Soma Nandi. She rang me up and informed that Dipa has received gold in the vaulting table. I also got a few calls from outside and I am very happy because after Rio she could not take part in any competition. This is the first competition after her surgery and so I am very happy.
Meanwhile, mother Gouri Karmakar, a housewife, said, "Today I am feeling very happy because achieved gold even after a long gap."
The 24-year-old, who had acquired the fourth spot in the vault event of the 2016 Rio Olympics, scored 14.150 to secure the top position in the tournament.
The gymnast was out of action after her impressive performance in Rio Olympics because of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury.
Dipa's name has been included in the 10-member Indian gymnastics team for the Asian Games, which are slated to begin from 18 August.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Dipa for her achievement and tweeted, "India is proud of @DipaKarmakar! Congratulations to her on winning a well-deserved Gold in the vault event at the FIG World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey. This win is a prime example of her tenacity and never-say-die attitude."
