Paris Olympics 2024: India has seen a steady increase in the number of athletes participating at the Summer Olympics over the past few editions. The Indian contingent in Tokyo 2020 comprised of 124 athletes, making it the largest that the nation has ever sent to the Games. India bagged seven medals in the 2020 Olympics, with javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra clinching gold. Now at the Paris 2024 Olympics, India aims to increase the number of athletes further to increase its medal haul.
Indian athletes have already set a banchmark after achieving unprecedented success at the recently held 19th Asian Games in China. India bagged a record 107 medals that included 28 gold, 38 silvers and 41 bronze medals.
Trap shooter Bhowneesh Mendiratta won India’s first quota place at the ISSF world championships and was the first to make it to the Paris Olympics from India. Race walkers Priyanka Goswami and Akshdeep Singh were the first Indians to qualify in the Athletics category.
In the shooting and wrestling category, quotas are won by countries rather than individuals. This rule is followed to prevent a small number of countries from dominating the whole event. It also means that the athlete who clinched quota can be replaced by another.
According to Olympicgames.com, National Olympic Committees (NOC) have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Games and athletes' participation at the Paris event depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their contingent at Paris 2024.
