LIVE SCORE | INDIA vs NEW ZEALAND | 2ND TEST | DAY 3

EDEN GARDENS, KOLKATA

FULL SCORECARD

Bhuvneshwar Kumar says, "In India we generally don't get these kinds of wickets. When you get one, you just try to make the most of it. When you contribute to a win, it's something special for you. Thanks to physio and trainer, they worked hard with me [on ankle injury]. Shami is the most lazy person in the team, but when he's on the field he always gives it 100%. It's a sweet victory, because you don't generally get these sorts of wickets [in India] which help seamers."

NEW ZEALAND (2nd innings)

SESSION 3...

81.1 overs: WICKET! India win! Kohli is pumped up. Yet another series win for him. First in Sri Lanka. Then in West Indies. Now, in India. And that has taken India to the number 1 ranking in Tests. Trent Boult c Vijay b Mohammed Shami 4 (14b 0x4 0x6).

76.1 overs: WICKET! Full and outside off, Henry drives it uppishly through the covers. Virat Kohli shows good reflexes at short extra cover and takes it one-handed to his right. India a wicket away from a win... Matt Henry c Kohli b Jadeja 18 (44b 2x4 0x6).

67.3 overs: WICKET! Whoa, whoa, whoa... the Black Caps are clueless against spin and seam in Eden. What a ball. On a good length outside off, Patel looks to defend and he thinks he has covered the line. Bhuvi shows him he hasn't. The ball curves in, goes past the inside edge and knocks the off stump off the ground. 2 more wickets away... Jeetan Patel b Kumar 2 (7b 0x4 0x6).

66.1 overs: WICKET! Drags it on! Once again, the break has proved to be the nemesis for the Kiwis! They have lost wickets almost after every break - be it Drinks, Lunch or Tea. Once again, this was the Drinks break and they have lost their concentration. Landed outside off, Ronchi stays back to cut but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads which hits the middle stump. Jadeja is up and running in celebration. The Eden crowd is going wild! India 3 wickets away from a 2-0 win. Luke Ronchi b Jadeja 32 (60b 4x4 0x6).

60.4 overs: WICKET! The off stump has been sent flying! New Zealand are disintegrating here. Terrific exhibition of reverse swing bowling. Shami keeps this outside off, Watling comes forward to defend but the ball tails in at quick pace and beats him. Boom! Back goes the off stump. We could be in for a finish today itself. BJ Watling b Mohammed Shami 1 (8b 0x4 0x6).

60 overs: New Zealand 156/5.

58.4 overs: WICKET! New Zealand have lost half their side. Full and outside off, coming in a long way, Santner looks to defend but is beaten by the late movement and is hit on the pads. Shami appeals, umpire Kettleborough thinks for a while and then raises his finger. Santner is not happy, he reckons there was an inside edge but replays do not agree with him. That looks pretty close and in all likelihood, the ball would have hit the stumps. Mitchell Santner lbw b Mohammed Shami 9 (20b 2x4 0x6).

53.3 overs: WICKET! Caught behind! Latham departs after a fighting knock. Flighted outside off, a bit wide, Latham is drawn into the drive and gets a thin outside edge. Saha takes a very good catch. The Indians appeal but umpire Tucker does not raise his finger. However, Latham walks. May be a bit of loss in concentration. Tom Latham c Saha b Ashwin 74 (148b 8x4 0x6).

The players are back out in the middle. 30 overs left in the day. Looking at the way India have bowled, they might bowl even more, if the Kiwis survive. Here is MOHAMMED SHAMI.

SESSION 2...

We saw lots of overs from the spinners in this session and India might continue with the same tactic. New Zealand still need 241 more runs but they are not thinking of that as of now. They have to bat four sessions at least to save this game. Let's see how the visitors battle it out in the final session. Join us back in a bit to catch the action.

TEA: Exciting session of Test cricket! 80 runs were scored for the loss of three wickets from 36 overs. New Zealand are fighting out hard but they lost three wickets in this session. Ashwin removed Guptill after a 50-plus stand between the Kiwi openers. Henry got a start but failed to convert when Jadeja sent him back to the dressing room. Ashwin came back and removed Taylor and put India on top completely.

50 overs: New Zealand 132/3. Tom Latham 73 (136b 8x4 0x6), Luke Ronchi 7 (21b 1x4 0x6), Mohammed Shami 10-2-25-0, Ravichandran Ashwin 21-4-60-2.

42.6 overs: WICKET! Flighted ball around off, slower through the air, Taylor tries to defend but gets squared up completely and plays down the wrong line. He is hit flush on the pads and there is a big appeal for a leg before. The umpire has no hesitation in raising his finger this time. Taylor has to walk back. Ashwin gets his second wicket. Another batsman out LBW and this match now holds the record for most LBW in a Test in India. Ross Taylor lbw b Ashwin 4 (28b 0x4 0x6).

40 overs: New Zealand 113/2. Tom Latham 62 (113), Ross Taylor 3 (12).

35.5 overs: WICKET! New Zealand have lost their second wicket. EDGED AND TAKEN! Tossed up around off from round the wicket, Nicholls tries to defend but gets an outside edge. The ball goes straight into the hands of Rahane at first slip. India get the breakthrough finally. Coming back to the ball, there was not enough turn and Nicholls failed to cover that line. Actually angle did the trick there for Jadeja. Henry Nicholls c Rahane b Jadeja 24 (66b 2x4 0x6).

30 overs: New Zealand 92/1. Henry Nicholls 20 (47), Tom Latham 48 (84).

25 overs: New Zealand 72/1. Henry Nicholls 13 (31), Tom Latham 35 (70).

16.5 overs: WICKET! Gone this time! Ashwin bowls it full around the off stump line, Guptill brings his bat down to defend but it's jammed due to his front pad. As a result, Guptill is hit on the pads and there is a big appeal for a leg before wicket. Umpire Kettleborough raises his finger this time and India finally get a breakthrough. Ashwin strikes in the very first over after lunch. Guptill's poor form continues and he will be lucky to play the next Test. Martin Guptill lbw b Ashwin 24 (49b 3x4 0x6).

We are back for the afternoon session! Martin Guptill and Tom Latham are out in the middle. Ravichandran Ashwin to bowl.

SESSION 1...

New Zealand still have a mountain to climb as they have to bat out five more sessions to save this game. India will look to come back hard in the second session and pick some quick wickets. So join us back in a bit to catch the day 2 action!

Pretty good session for the Kiwis! They've played out the tricky phase as they didn't lose a single wicket. First they bowled out the hosts when Wagner and Boult snared a wicket each and then the openers gave them a gritty start. The Indian bowlers tried their best but Latham and Guptill played to the merit of the ball and gave their side a cautious start.

16 overs: New Zealand 55/0. Martin Guptill 24 (44b 3x4 0x6), Tom Latham 31 (52b 4x4 0x6), Mohammed Shami 6-2-16-0, Ravichandran Ashwin 4-0-18-0.

Simon Doull on air says that Gautam Gambhir is on a substitute for Shikhar Dhawan. The latter was hit a couple of times on the left thumb by Trent Boult while batting in the third innings. Doull further says that the news from the Indian camp is that it is not very serious and he has been rested for this innings as a precautionary measure. Remember, the third and final Test starts on Friday. Not much time to recover.

A good bowling performance from New Zealand but again, they failed to capitalize on a good start. In both innings they had India in trouble but a couple of good partnerships swung the momentum. It is now upto their batsmen to try and fight hard. 376 is the target but they will try and look at it as trying to play out 5-and-a-half sessions. Their first aim would be to see off this hour's play without losing a wicket. Stay tuned for their reply.

So then it has taken around 13 overs this morning to take the remaining two wickets. Guess the runs today would not matter too much as the Kiwis were already in troubled waters after the Rohit-Saha partnership. Boult got himself into the wickets column with 3 scalps in the second innings.

INDIA (2nd innings)

76.5 overs: WICKET! India are finally bowled out for 263. Mohammed Shami c Latham b Boult 1 (7b 0x4 0x6).

73.4 overs: WICKET! Finally, a wicket. Short ball at the body, and Bhuvneshwar couldn't get on top of the bounce. Bhuvneshwar Kumar c Nicholls b Wagner 23 (51b 2x4 1x6).

Morning everyone! Welcome to the coverage of the day 4 of the second Test between India and New Zealand in Kolkata.

RECAP

Rohit Sharma came up with a resolute knock of 82 runs on a two-paced track as India survived a top order collapse to grab the driving seat on a riveting third day of the second cricket Test against New Zealand at the Eden Gardens here on Sunday.

The hosts reached 227/8 in their second innings at stumps, opening up a comfortable 339-run gulf with their rivals. Earlier in the day, the New Zealand first innings folded at 204, conceding a 112-run lead to the hosts. India had totalled 316 in their opening essay.

Rohit (82; 132 b, 9x4, 2x6), who had struck an unbeaten 68 in the first Test at Kanpur, delivered when his side needed the most, as he continued his love affair with the famed ground where he scored 177 against the West Indies in a Test and 264 in a One-Day International opposite Sri Lanka.

At close of play, local boy Wriddhiman Saha (39; 87 b, 3x4) was unbeaten -- the junior partner in a 103-run seventh wicket stand off 179 balls with Rohit that consolidated India's position post-tea break. Giving Saha company was Bhuvneshwar Kumar (9; 1x6).

Mumbaikar Rohit showed exemplary grit as he earlier combined with skipper Virat Kohli (45, 65 b, 7x4) for a 48-run fifth-wicket partnership at a time India were tottering at 43/4 in the post-lunch session with the Kiwi pacers causing havoc, exploiting the uneven bounce on the wicket.

Kiwi quicks Trent Boult (2/28) and Matt Henry (3/44) had virtually brought their side back in contention in the match after lunch by unleashing a barrage of short-pitched offerings which caught the Indians repeatedly on the wrong foot.

India lost four star batsmen cheaply, with Henry claiming three of them.

Henry picked up Murali Vijay (7) off the fourth ball of the session, with the angled away moving delivery inducing a nick that finished at second slip. The Indian opener had got out to the same bowler in the first innings.

The Christchurch-born then saw the back of Cheteshwar Pujara (4) in his next over with a leg before verdict, though television replay indicated that the ball could have missed the leg stump.

Dhawan, who was struggling against the rising deliveries and once even took a hit on his left shoulder in the morning, became Boult's first victim, reducing India to 34/3. The left hander offered a defensive bat to a delivery that cut in, and the leather struck his pad in front of the middle stump.

India suffered a further setback when Ajinkya Rahane (1) tried to pull a short ball from Boult and managed only a top edge to long leg.

Kohli, whose blade has never quite fired in Test matches at Eden Gardens, played some wonderful strokes, including an out-of-the-world on drive to Henry that rocketed to the fence. He also negotiated well the aggressive Boult, who kept up a nagging line on or a shade out of the off stump hoping for an edge.

But Boult finally won the duel with one that kept low bringing the Indian skipper to his knees and hit the pad.

Mitchell Santner saw the back of Ravichandran Ashwin (5) close to tea, with the Indian falling leg before- - the fourth batsman to get out in this fashion during the innings.

Rohit began cautiously -- though he hit an early six off Jeetan Patel -- taking 50 deliveries to strike his first four. But once Kohli went back, Sharma took charge, and showed his flair with some elegant shots in the off region, as also a couple of delicate sweeps on the leg side.

He got out to a sharp turning ball from Santner that took a fatal edge. Santner tasted another success in the same over, by getting rid of Ravindra Jadeja (6) to finish with figures of 3/51.

Saha seemed to be continuing from his valiant unbeaten 54-run opening innings knock as he played a polished innings.

In the morning, the visitors' overnight batsmen put up a gritty fight to cut India's lead to 112 runs.

Comeback man Jeetan Patel (47; 47b, 9x4) and wicketkeeper B.J. Watling (25) stitched together a 60-run stand for the eighth wicket after resuming at the overnight score of 128/7.

Patel, who got his highest Test score, luckily survived in the day's 12th over when a straight one from Ravindra Jadeja caught him rooted to his crease and plumb in front. Patel, who had started the long walk back towards the hut, was called back by the umpire after replays showed the left-arm spinner had overstepped.

Patel though failed to capitalise on the "life" provided, falling in the next over to Ravichandran Ashwin.

Mohammed Shami (3/46) then removed Watling and Neil Wagner, as the tourists' innings came to an end 37 minutes before lunch. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (5/48) was the most successful Indian bowler.
