New Delhi: The first match of the three-match ODI series between India and West Indies is being played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, today. Rohit Sharma-led national team won the toss and decided to bowl first in team India's 1000th ODI match.
Before the start of the match, the Indian cricket team paid tribute to veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar. India's most famous singer passed away on Sunday at a hospital in Mumbai. She was 92-years-old.
Before the start of the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the players of the Indian team observed a minute's silence in memory of late Lata Mangeshkar and sported black armbands to pay tribute to her.
“The Indian Cricket Team is wearing black armbands today to pay their respects to Bharat Ratna Smt. Lata Mangeshkar Ji who left for her heavenly abode on Sunday morning. The queen of melody, Lata didi loved cricket, always supported the game, and backed Team India,” tweeted BCCI.
As the 'Bharat Ratna' breathed her last in the early hours of the day, several cricketers came in numbers to pour their condolences.
“Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Lata Ji. Her melodious songs touched millions of people around the world. Thank you for all the music and the memories. My deepest condolences to the family & the loved one,” tweeted Virat Kohli on Lata Mangeshkar's demise.
“We have lost the Nightingale of India. Deeply saddened to learn about the demise of the legend Lata Mangeshkar ji. The melody of her voice shall echo through centuries. Rest in peace,” said Dinesh Karthik on her demise.
