FULL SCORECARD
NEXT: Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Delhi Daredevils Live Scores
Good performance by Kings XI Punjab today. They bowled well and then they batted well too. First win this season for KXIP. Their bowlers set the match for them before openers played well to provide a strong platform for the chase. There was a little hiccup when Murugan Ashwin took three quick wickets but Glenn Maxwell played a significant cameo to take Punjab past the target. Second successive loss for Rising Pune Supergiants.
Kings XI Punjab innings
- It's over. KXIP have beaten RPS by 6 wickets.
- 18 overs: Just 9 runs are needed from 12 balls.
- 17 overs: Kings XI Punjab are in a good position now. They are very close to registering their first win this season. Kings XI Punjab 131/4 (22 runs required from 18 balls). Maxwell 13 (7b 1x4 1x6), Saha 1 (1b 0x4 0x6), M Ashwin 4-0-36-3, Perera 2-0-21-0.
- WICKET! Shaun Marsh is out. Murugan Ashwin provides the second wicket. Shaun Marsh b M Ashwin 4 (6b 0x4 0x6).
- WICKET! Finally something to cheer for RPS. Ankit Sharma has provided the breakthrough. Manan Vohra departs after playing a good knock. Manan Vohra lbw b Ankit Sharma 51 (33b 7x4 0x6).
- 50 for Manan Vohra in just 31 balls.
- 10 overs: The run rate has dipped a bit in the last couple of overs but Murali Vijay and Manan Vohra has ensured the Kings XI Punjab have wickets in hand when they try to launch an attack. Pune Supergiants are still looking for the first breakthrough. The match is slipping out of their hands. Kings XI Punjab 71/0 (82 runs required from 60 balls). Vijay 40 (37b 5x4 1x6), Vohra 29 (23b 3x4 0x6), Pathan 1-0-7-0, Ankit Sharma 3-0-23-0.
- 6 overs: Vijay and Vohra have provided a brilliant start to Punjab's chase. They not only kept their wickets intact, they have maintained a good run rate. In the powerplay, they have taken their team's score to 50. That's a great start. Kings XI Punjab 50/0 (103 runs required from 14 overs). Vijay 29 (25b 4x4 1x6), Vohra 19 (11b 3x4 0x6), R Ashwin 2-0-11-0, Ishant 3-0-26-0.
- Murali Vijay and Manan Vohra set to face Ishant Sharma with the new ball. 153 is not a big total. Pune need wickets on regular intervals to defend this total. Kings XI Punjab need to keep cool and avoid playing foolish shots.
Rising Pune Supergiants innings
Kings XI Punjab have done well to keep Rising Pune Supergiants to 152. It's not a very big score and considering the kind of fire-power their batting has, they should be able achieve the target. Faf du Plessis played a good knock but he didn't get support from other batsmen. RPS needed to be more aggressive.
- 20 overs: Mohit Sharma bowled a superb last over. Just 3 runs he gave and took 2 wickets. Third wicket was a run out. Rising Pune Supergiants 152/7.
- WICKET! Sandeep Sharma comes back into attack and strikes on his first ball. Thisara Perera wanted to took the sky route but didn't time it well and Mohit took an easy catch at the long-off boundary. Thisara Perera c Sharma b Sandeep Sharma 8 (9b 1x4 0x6).
- 10 overs: KXIP bowlers have pulled things back a bit after the fall of Kevin Pietersen. Rising Pune Supergiants 76/2. Perera 8 (8b 1x4 0x6). du Plessis 36 (26b 6x4 0x6), Maxwell 1-0-3-0, Mohit 2-0-12-0.
- WICKET! A very good catch at midwicket by Manan Vohra to dismiss Kevin Pietersen. Abbott provides the second wicket. The partnership was looking dangerous. Kevin Pietersen c Vohra b Abbott 15 (15b 2x4 0x6).
- 6 overs: Good session for Rising Pune Supergiants. They were slow to start with and even lost the wicket Ajinkya Rahane. But after that, Faf and Pietersen have really batted well and collected some crucial boundaries to propel the scorecard. Rising Pune Supergiants 49/1. Faf du Plessis 24 (15b 5x4 0x6), Pietersen 13 (10b 2x4 0x6), Sahu 1-0-10-0, Sandeep Sharma 3-0-17-1.
- WICKET! Bowled him. Rahane wanted to go over the top but inside edge sent the ball onto his stumps. Sandeep Sharma is the bowler. Ajinkya Rahane b Sandeep Sharma 9 (11b 2x4 0x6). RPS 10 for 1 in 2.1 overs.
- Players are in. Ajinkya Rahane and Faf du Plessis have marked their guards. Sandeep Sharma to bowl the first over.

PREVIEW
Getting his team composition right will be Mahendra Singh Dhoni's primary aim as Rising Pune Supergiants meet an out-of-sorts Kings XI Punjab in an Indian Premier League cricket tournament encounter.
While the IPL debutants Supergiants have a win and a loss to show for their efforts, Kings XI Punjab has been beaten comprehensively in both their matches as they are already at the bottom of the heap.
Since the league has just about completed the first week, the tables can be turned upside down with a few back-to-back wins, which both the teams will be aiming for.
For India's limited overs captain Dhoni, it has always been about getting his combination right. He has believed in a set of players while ICC World T20 was on and persisted with them throughout the tournament despite some criticism by the pundits.
In CSK, it was a different scenario, where the Chennai franchise always had half the battle won at the auction table itself which resulted in their consistent show over the years.
But in Pune, Dhoni is yet to figure out what exactly should be the combination.
"We need to look at the team composition," Dhoni had said at the post-match press conference after his team's defeat against Gujarat Lions.
While RP Singh has been Dhoni's trusted lieutenant in the India team once upon a time but the left-arm seamer has lost a lot of his sting and perhaps is not same bowler that he used to be in 2007-08 phase.
Similarly with Ishant Sharma, the problem has always been his lack of consistency in the shorter formats which has prevented him from getting longer ropes either for national team or the franchise team.
If Dhoni looks at his team, he will find that other two Indian options are Irfan Pathan and Iswar Pandey. While Pathan is no longer the player he used to be but his batting can give Dhoni a chance to play him in the playing XI.
Right-arm pacer Pandey has also not been an IPL regular but can generate a bit of bounce and swing.
Dhoni did give Ashwin his full quota of overs but the past few months in shortest format has not been the best for the Tamil Nadu tweaker. His statemate Murugan Ashwin has done decently in his debut season.
The bowler who has had stand-out performance is Ranji legend Rajat Bhatia, who has kept batsmen under check bowling his gentle medium pacers with occasional cutters.
As far as the batting is concerned, sans Faf du Plessis, the others did not come good against Gujarat Lions. Kevin Pietersen couldn't really set the stage on fire and Mitch Marsh is yet to prove himself as an ideal replacement of Dwayne Bravo – someone on whom Dhoni entrusted his faith blindly irrespective of whether CSK was batting or bowling at the death.
For Kings XI Punjab, it's been another season with a sorry start. The biggest factor for KXIP has been the non-performance of their foreign recruits in both the matches.
KXIP's successful campaign in 2014 was largely due to the exploits of Glenn Maxwell (552 runs) and current skipper David Miller (446 runs), who were in prime form at that stage.
However, Maxwell went off the boil during their last-place finish in 2015 when he could muster 145 runs. Miller had a decent season without being extraordinary with 357 runs to his credit.
In both matches this season, Miller and Maxwell had flopped putting too much pressure on the other batsmen.
Test specialist Murali Vijay has never been the T20 player he used to be once he left Chennai Super Kings. Young Manan Vohra has always played attractive strokes in between but against top quality bowling has been susceptible.
In bowling, the team depended on Mitchell Johnson but for somebody who is already retired from international cricket, it was not possible to come and make an impact straightaway in a top-level T20 competition.
His new ball partner Sandeep Sharma does not have the pace to trouble batsmen consistently. He burst into the scene in 2014 but have been able to do very little post that performance. In a nutshell, Pune Supergiants start as favourites.
