RCB IPL 2024 Playoffs Race: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) squared off against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday (April 22), marking their 8th game of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, unfortunately resulting in their 7th defeat.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) journey in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has been extremely challenging, with only one win to their name so far. RCB's net run rate stands at a discouraging -1.046, leaving them with just 2 points and firmly rooted at the bottom of IPL 2024 points table, currently occupying the 10th position.

Is Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Out of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Playoffs Race?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) haven't been mathematically eliminated from contention for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Playoffs. However, their path forward has significantly toughened as far as their playoff chances are concerned.

Traditionally in Indian Premier League (IPL), teams typically needed to secure at least 7 wins to secure a playoff berth. However, Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 is a 10-team tournament and for any team to qualify for IPL 2024 Playoffs, they must win at least eight matches in the league stage to advance to the next stage.

With only 6 matches remaining for RCB, who have so far registered 1 win and 7 defeats, even winning all of them would not guarantee them a playoffs berth. Given RCB's current performance, achieving such a streak appears unlikely. Even if Royal Challengers Bengaluru manage this feat, their chances of advancing to IPL 2024 playoffs would remain almost impossible.

In the history of IPL, no team has ever reached the playoffs by winning just 6 matches. Every team that has made it to the playoffs has secured at least 7 victories during the league stage.

From IPL 2018 to 2021, the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs typically had 14 points. Notably, in 2019, Sunrisers Hyderabad clinched a playoff spot with just 12 points. However, since the introduction of two new teams in 2022, teams have needed to secure 16 points to make it to the playoffs.

RCB have so far won 1 game and lost 7. With 6 matches remaining, even if RCB win all their remaining matches and end up having 14 points at the end of league stage, they will still not qualify for IPL playoffs. Since 2022, IPL has become a 10-team format and for a team to reach playoffs, they need at least 16 points at the end of league stage.
