Rohit Sharma back stiffness update: In a concerning update for Indian cricket fans, seasoned opener Rohit Sharma's struggle with back stiffness has cast doubt on his availability for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.
Rohit Sharma was notably absent from the field during Kolkata's batting innings in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday (May 3). The former MI skipper came out to bat as 'Impact Player' and got out after scoring 11 runs off 12 deliveries.
During the post-match presser, following Mumbai's 24-run defeat against Kolkata, veteran spinner Piyush Chawla revealed the reason behind Rohit Sharma's absence from MI's playing 11.
"He just had a mild back stiffness, so it was just a precautionary thing," Chawla told reporters at Wankhede Stadium.
Rohit Sharma's recent struggles with back issues are not new. In March 2024, the star batter had to sit out from taking the field on Day 3 of the fifth and final Test match against England due to a stiff back.
37-year-old Rohit Sharma is currently the highest run-scorer for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2024, scoring 326 runs in 11 matches. However, besides the injury worries, Rohit's form is also raising concerns, especially with Team India preparing for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in June.
Mumbai Indians knocked out of IPL 2024 Playoffs race?
Mumbai Indians' hopes of qualifying for the IPL 2024 playoffs are hanging by a thread, with their chances seeming virtually impossible. To even stand a slight chance of qualifying, MI must win all their remaining matches and hope for other teams' results to favor them.
However, this scenario appears highly unlikely given their current position at the 9th spot in the table. Adding to their challenge, Mumbai Indians are scheduled to face in-form heavyweights Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Lucknow Super Giants in their three remaining matches, all of whom currently occupy the top four positions in IPL 2024 points table.
