MS Dhoni in IPL 2025: Five-time IPL-winning captain MS Dhoni is expected to play at least one more season for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). His future with the franchise is not dependent on any retention policy/rules, and if the legendary keeper-batter chooses to continue, he will be retained for IPL 2025 season, Cricbuzz reports.

When the IPL tournament started way back in the year 2008, there was a policy that classified players retired from international cricket for five years as 'uncapped' players. This rule was removed in 2021.

There are rumors that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now considering reinstating this policy. If the policy is reinstated, Dhoni could be categorized as an 'uncapped' player for the IPL 2025 auction, allowing him to play another season with CSK even if he is not among the retained players.

MS Dhoni categorized as an 'uncapped' player would enable Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to retain Dhoni for up to INR 4 crore, a significant saving compared to his previous retention amount of INR 12 crore.

MS Dhoni's participation in IPL 2025 not dependent on retention policy

According to Cricbuzz, the number of retentions or the format of IPL mega auction will not impact MS Dhoni's continuation with Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni will play in IPL 2025, even if new rules allow franchises to retain even just two players. MS Dhoni continues to be CSK's top priority; doesn't matter if they have to let go one of their key players or pay a heavy price for the retention. However, this depends on Dhoni's decision to continue as a player for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
