The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 might still be some distance away but the mega-auction scheduled before the start of the next season, there is a lot of planning and plotting that the ten franchises need to do. It is no different for the Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans (GT) either. GT might have gone to play two finals in their first two season in the IPL- in 2022 and 2023- even going on to win the title in their debut season. However, their performance in IPL 2024 would have made them realise that there will be downs too in what is one of the toughest T20 leagues in the world.

With an intense bidding war, expected later this year, here are 3 players that GT can potentially release from their teams.

1. Kane Williamson

The evergreen nice boy of modern-day cricket Kane Williamson could be sent to the auction pool by the franchise. Notably, GT first included Kane Williamson in the team when they were looking for a batter who could provide stability at the number 3 slot ahead of IPL 2023. However, Williamson sustained in the injury in the first match of the competition and was subsequently ruled out of the entire tournament. In the next season, Williamson only got to play 2 matches with GT's preferred overseas quadrant being- Rashid Khan, Azmatullah Omarzai, David Miller and Noor Ahmed. That suggests the New Zealand international may well be released ahead of the mega-auction.

2. Rahul Tewatia

There is no official confirmation on the number of retentions each team participating in IPL 2025 would be allowed. However, in case only three Indian playere are allowed to be retained by each franchise, Rahul Tewatia may well have to part ways with GT. With the Impact Player rule in effect, Tewatia's services with the ball was not as useful as it had been earlier which made pretty much a one-dimensional player. With other top-quality Indian players to choose from for retentions including their captain Shubman Gill, speedster Mohammed Shami and youngster Sai Sudharsan, Tewatia might well have to go back to the auction table.

3. Mohit Sharma

It had been a redemption of sorts for India's 2015 World Cup star Mohit Sharma. Once out of reckoning, he joined GT as a net bowler only to impress head coach Ashish Nehra with his performances. He was picked in the team and finished with 27 wickets in 14 matches, much to the astonishment of fans and pundits alike. However, in IPL 2024 he was not that effective. Batters figured out a way to deal with his slower ball variations and Mohit more often than not ended up leading far too many runs. With no dearth of domestic talent in the GT side, the 35-year-old could be released by the team ahead of the mega-auction.
