A major positive update has come up for Punjab Kings before the start of IPL 2021. Punjab Kings' star speedster Mohammed Shami, who has not played a single match for team India since December due to injury, will most likely play the opening game for Punjab against Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021.

Shami had suffered a wrist injury during India's tour of Australia. Due to this, he had to leave the tour midway.

The 14th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to take place from April 9. Punjab Kings will kick-off their season on 12 April against Rajasthan Royals.

Giving a major update on Mohammed Shami's fitness, Punjab Kings coach Anil Kumble told Sportstar,"He is fine as far as I know. He is coming to the bio-bubble for the quarantine and he will be out in a few days. I know he hasn’t played any matches since his injury but he is good to go. We are really looking forward to him playing a few practice games and then getting ready for the first game.”

Mohammed Shami started low-intensity training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru last month to recover from his injury. The speedster had played a major role with the ball for Punjab in IPL 2020 last year. Shami bagged 20 wickets in 14 matches - his best performance in an IPL season.

The 30-year-old will mark his return to the field from IPL 2021 itself.  After this year's IPL, team India has to play the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in June.
