Badminton Asia Team Championships: The PV Sindhu-led women's badminton team of India has written a new story in their storied history as they have secured a guaranteed medal finish at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia. They defeated Hong Kong 3-0 in the quarter final on Friday, February 16.
PV Sindhu is amongst the greatest individual athletes India has ever produced as she remains the sole athlete to ever win an Olympic medal in an individual sports events in two different Olympics (silver medal at Rio Olympics 2016 and bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics 2020).
The Indian Women's Badminton team dismantled Hong Kong in an emphatic fashion as these were the following results in the battle between the Asian giants of the sport:
- PV Sindhu defeated Lo Sin Yan Happy 21-7, 16-21, 21-12
- Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa defeated Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam 21-10, 21-14
- Ashmita Chaliha defeated Yeung Sum Yee 21-12, 21-13
India now awaits the winner of the cohesive battle between the two greats of the sport, Japan and China, who battle in their quarter final fixture to seal a spot in the semi finals. India's win has thus ensured that the peninsular nation, who is having its own share of laurels in the sport from past 12+ years, are guaranteed atleast a bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia.
The Indian faithful will also be pleased with the performance of the legendary PV Sindhu, who is coming off from a rough 2023 that was highly marred with constant injuries, as the shuttler looks to regain her confidence and rhythm, keeping in mind the upcoming 2024 Olympics in the city of Paris. The signs of it were visible during her quarter final bout with Lo Sin Yan, where she showed a glimpse of her former self, as she made a brilliant comeback in the final set to seal the deal for India.
