Deepti Sharma viral run-out: Indian bowling legend Jhulan Goswami career's last international match had a fairy-tale ending as India women's cricket team defeated England by16 runs in third and final ODI at Lord's on Friday to attain a 3-0 whitewash. Chasing 170 for the win, the equation went down to England needing 17 runs and India needing just one wicket to win the 3rd ODI. Charlotte Dean, batting at the non-striker's end, backed up a little too much and bowler Deepti Sharma took off the bails to get her 'Mankad run-out' in the third delivery of the 44th over. Indian players were seen celebrating their 16-run win while England dressing room and Dean were left shell shocked.
A huge controversy erupted after Deepti Sharma's run out. The incident garnered a lot of reactions. England's Sam Billings and James Anderson took to twitter to criticize Deepti but R Ashwin was quick to brutally take down the English duo with a tweet.
Billings stated, "There’s surely not a person who has played the game that thinks this is acceptable? Just not cricket…"
"Well within the laws but not in the spirit. Just my opinion… the law should be changed back to a warning system or penalty runs for excessive backing up for eg".
Anderson stated, "Spot on. No intention of bowling the ball".
Reacting to Anderson, Billings quipped, "Imagine how many more wickets you could get James".
Lashing out at Billings and Anderson, Ashwin wrote, "In fact that’s a great idea. How about awarding that wicket to the bowler for “ presence of mind” under immense pressure and of course knowing the social stigma that he/she would have to deal with post doing it. How about a bravery award to go with it too @ICC ?"
