New Delhi: Team India defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs to take a 1–0 lead in the two-match Test series. This was Rohit Sharma's first Test match as full-time captain of the national team. India's empathetic win in the Test series opener helped Rohit script history in his captaincy debut itself.

Rohit Sharma has become only the second Indian captain to lead India to an innings win in the first match as Test captain. Before Rohit, the only Indian captain who had attained this feat in Tests was Polly Umrigar.

India had defeated New Zealand by an innings and 27 runs in Mumbai in 1955–56 under Polly Umrigar's captaincy.

Earlier this year in January, Virat Kohli was removed as India's Test captain after which Rohit Sharma was appointed as new captain of the Indian Test team.

The first Test match between India and Sri Lanka in Mohali was the 100th Test of Virat Kohli's career. Before taking to the field on the second day of Ind vs SL 1st Test match, Rohit along with fellow Indian players gave a guard of honor to Virat.

Coming to the India-Sri Lanka 1st Test, India defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs in the first match of the two-match Test series.

Batting first, India declared their first innings at 574 for 8 on the second day.  In response, Sri Lanka got all out for just 174 runs in their first innings as India forced them to play a follow-on.

In the second innings as well, the Sri Lankan team looked completely clueless in front of the lethal Indian bowling attack and could only manage 178 runs in 60 overs.

For India, Jadeja and Ashwin starred with the ball as the spin duo bagged 4 wickets apiece. The second and final Test between the two teams will be played in Bengaluru from March 12, which will be a Day-Night Night Test.
