The incident took place in the last session of the first day of the Chennai Test. Skipper Kohli introduced Ashwin to bowl the 87th over.

On the last ball of his over, Root slog-sweeped Ashwin over the mid-wicket. He hit the ball so perfectly that it went for a maximum but suddenly the England skipper fell on the ground as he had suffered a cramp.

Virat Kohli helped out the opponent skipper by becoming the physio of the England team for a while, he grabbed Root's legs and stretched it, after which he got some relief from the pain and was ready to bat again.

England captain Joe Root, playing his 100th Test match on the first day of Chennai Test, remained unbeaten after scoring 128 runs in the first innings. During this, he faced 197 balls and hit 1 six in his innings in addition to 14 blistering fours. On Day 1, England scored 263/3 at stumps.
