The central government has informed Supreme Court that it has agreed to give an extra opportunity to candidates who missed their chance due to the Coronavirus pandemic. "Relaxation will be given to the extent of providing one extra attempt for Civil Service Examination (CSE), specifically limited to CSE-2021, to those candidates who had their last chance to appear in the year 2020," the Centre said.
The apex court was hearing a plea of one of the candidates Rachna Singh who missed her exam during the Covid pandemic.
Rachna Singh, a civil services aspirant, filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking an extra attempt in the UPSC exams for those candidates who had their last attempt in the preliminary exam held in October 2020.
The UPSC preliminary exam was held on October 4. The exam was initially scheduled in May but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier, the Union government had said in the Supreme Court that it cannot afford to give another chance to the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) aspirants, including “last-attempters”, who claimed their preparations for the October 4 prelims were severely restricted due to the pandemic.
After the Covid 19 hit the country, the preparation of candidates was hindered due to the lockdown. Students have been demanding the government to provide an extra chance to those who couldn't perform well due to the covid crisis.
