India vs Australia 1st T20I: Team India is all set to take on Australia in a three-match T20I series starting on Tuesday, 20th September. The limited overs series against Australia will help India get the right team combinations and strengthen its preparations before the T20 World Cup 2022 that starts next month in Australia.
Ahead of Ind vs Aus 1st T20I, skipper Rohit Sharma was asked if there is a possibility of Virat Kohli coming out to bat as an opener in the T20 World Cup. Rohit came up with a very straightforward reply, saying that the team wants to be as flexible as possible.
Virat opened alongside KL Rahul in India's last match of Asia Cup 2022 against Afghanistan and went on to score his T20 career's maiden century (61-ball 122*). Kohli seems to be enjoying batting as an opener, in T20Is for India and for RCB in IPL. The number 1 batting slot helps senior batter Kohli to settle in and shift gears as per the situation demand.
Speaking at a press conference in Mohali on Sunday, Rohit said, "It is always nice to have options available for you. It is important going into a World Cup that you have flexibility. You want the players to be in best shape batting at any position. When we try and do something new, that does not mean that's a problem."
"For us, we understand the quality of all our players and what they bring for us. But yeah, it is an option [Virat Kohli opening] for us, we will always keep that in mind. Since we have not taken a third opener, he opens for his franchise and he has done really well, so it is a definite option for us but K L Rahul will open for us at the T20 World Cup. KL's performances often go unnoticed. He is a very important player for us," Rohit further added.
