India’s dream of winning their maiden Champions Trophy went up in smoke as they again faltered in front of Australia to go down 1-3 in shootout in the final in Breda, Netherlands on Sunday.
Australia won their 15th Champions Trophy and India settled as the runner-up for the second time in a row.
The match stretched to shootouts after both side ended on 1-1 after the scheduled 60 minutes.
Australia were the first to score through their first penalty corner of the match. Govers scored right at the stroke of half-time when the ball ricocheted off Indian goal-keeper Sreejesh’s left hand.
Young Vivek Prasad scored the equalizer in 42nd minute after India had created a lot of pressure in the Australian defence line with controlled attacks. The second youngest player in the Indian side was at the right place at the right time right in front of the Australian goalie to flick the lob inside the goal.
