A magnificent century from team India's star opener Rohit Sharma (161) and his remarkable 162-run partnership with Test specialist Ajinkya Rahane (67) powered India to 300/6 on Day 1 of the India vs England second Test match at Chennai.
In the first innings of Day 1, Rohit and Rahane stitched a solid stand for the fourth wicket after losing skipper Virat (0), Cheteshwar Pujara (21) and Shubman Gill (0) too early. India lost sixth wicket in form of R Ashwin (13) who was cleaned up by Joe Root.
At Stumps, Rishabh Pant (33) and Axar Patel (5) remain unbeaten and will continue to move forward India's innings on Day 2. For England, Jack Leach and Moin Ali bagged two wickets each while Olly Stone and Joe Root took one wicket each.

The Rohit-Rahane partnership put India in a strong position against the visitors. Rohit Sharma's amazing knock came to an end after he scored 161 runs with the help of 18 fours and 2 sixes off 231 balls. This was Rohit's overall seventh hundred in his Test cricket career. Soon after Rohit's dismissal, Rahane was bowled by Moin Ali on 67.
Earlier, Indian team captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. The Indian team had a very poor start. In just the second over of the match, Olly Stone dismissed Shubman Gill for a duck.
After Gill's departure, Cheteshwar Pujara played well with Rohit Sharma. The duo shared an 85-run partnership for the second wicket. Pujara was caught by Ben Stokes in the slip off Jack Leach's ball after scoring 21 runs.
Captain Virat Kohli, who has scored 72 runs in the 1st Test against England, was bamboozled by a beautiful off-spin from veteran Moin Ali and had to return back to the pavilion without scoring any runs. It was first time in Kohli's career that a spinner dismissed him for a duck.
For the second Test, team India made three changes while England made four changes in their playing XI. Spin all-rounder Akshar Patel made his Test debut. Mohammad Siraj replaced Jasprit Bumrah. Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, playing his first Test in two years, has been included in place of Washington Sundar.
