Former Indian boxer Sakti Mazumdar (89), who had represented India at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, died on Friday after suffering a heart attack. He was 89. Mazumdar had age-related health problems and suffered a heart attack on Friday. 


"With profound grief, we regret to inform you that Mr. Shakti Mazumdar passed away at Ballygunge, West Bengal today," Asit Banerjee, President of Bengal Amateur Boxing Federation (BABF), said in a release.


Mazumdar had represented India at the Helsinki Olympics of 1952. He defeated Nguyen Van Cua of Vietnam by walkover in the first round of flyweight boxing. But he was defeated by South Korea's Han Soo-ann. 


His demise has sent shock waves across the boxing fraternity in India.
