Sunil Chhetri walked out for India one final time during the Blue Tigers' FIFA World Cup Qualifiers fixture against Kuwait at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday (June 6). While he could not score in his farewell match which ended goalless, it was an emotional moment for Chhetri as well as the football fans who welcomed captain fantastic into the stadium with massive tifos on display at the stands.


While a few banners thanked Chhetri for his contribution to Indian football, some showed how he single-handedly carried the burdern of Indian football during the course of his career. The picture of the fans displaying the tifos have gone gone viral on social media.

Not A Fairytale Farwell For Sunil Chhetri


It did not turn out to be a fairytale farwell for Chettri as India had to settle for a 0-0 draw in the must-win fixture. India's chance of qualification in the next round seem all the more difficult with the Blue Tigers set to take on Asia's top-ranked team Qatar in their final group-stage match while Kuwait are up against Afghanistan, a  team they would fancy beating.

Chhetri's parents were in attendance in this match and would be proud of a stellar international career of his son who netted 94 goals for the country, the most-ever by an Indian player.
