Serie A 2023-24: Lecce have announcd the sacking of their manager, Roberto d'Aversa, after the Italian was caught headbutting Hellas Verona striker Thomas Henry after the full time. Lecce lost 1-0 at home to Hellas Verona and after the full time whistle, Roberto was seen approaching towards Thomas Henry and it apeared to be a normal routine handshake or an exchange of wards, but no one expected the Italian to do a '2006 Zidane-esque' act and headbutt a rival player.
The action has now led Lecce to sack their manager, and with them struggling at 15th in the table, thing aren't looking bright for the Serie A side, with them currently fighting for survival in the league in a tightly-contested relegation battle. Lecce has 25 points in 28 games and are only a point above the 18th placed Frosinone, in the same number of matches.
Serie A's Relegation Battle Going Down To The Wire
The Serie A 2023-24 season is seeing a consecutive season where one team is outclassing everyone in the league and are the runaway league-leaders, as Inter Milan are repeating the antics of SSC Napoli's last season, as the title race is now well and truly over with the defeat of Juventus against Atalanta.
Howeever, what makes this season exciting is its relegation battle as merely 3 points separate the 7 sides. 20th placed Salernitana are all but relegated and there are no signs of the team turning thing around this season. Sassuolo are 19th in the table, but what's ironic about the team is that they are the only team in Serie A this season to beat Inter Milan in the league.
From 13th, till 19th, only 3 points separate teams from two relegation spots and these teams are as follows:
- Hellas Verona
- Cagliari
- Lecce
- Empoli
- Udinese
- Frosinone
- Sassuolo
Udinese, at the time of writing, remains the only team amongst the 7 teams, who have played a game fewer and if the side beats Lazio on March 12, they can earn themselves a cushion of comfort over Frosinone.
