Manchester City Vs Southampton, Premier League 2024/25 Matchday 9 Fixture | As It Happened

Manchester City were off to a splendid start, as they took the lead inside 5 minutes, thanks to heroics from Erling Haaland, who scored from an unconventional position from the ball of Matheus Nunes.

By the looks of the form of both sides this season, it looked like a humiliating afternoon in-store for the visitors, but their grit and determination at the back ensured that the home side fails to breach their last line of defence furthermore.

After a series of constant through-balls and movements in the final third, lack of clinicalness up front led to Manchester City’s inability to extend their lead.

Also, few moments of brilliance from Southampton were on the show as well, but Ederson managed well to keep them at bay, and secure a landmark of his own, as the goalkeeper has now registered 150 clean sheets with Manchester City.

Southampton Extend Winless Run In Premier League; On Verge Of Creating Unwanted History

Southampton FC were relegated from the league in 2022/23 season but have now returned to the top division after attaining promotion from Championship in 2023/24 season.

However, their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City now means that the 'Saints' are winless in their last 22 Premier League games, and now carry the third-longest winless run in the league's history.

Southampton now trail the winless runs of Derby County (32 games in 2007/08 season) and Sunderland (26 games from 2002 to 2005), and it's high time for Russell Martin's men to up-the-ante, if they are to avoid further embarrassment.
