The greatest show on earth, the FIFA World Cup kick-started with a glittering opening ceremony at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia. Or did it? Twitter certainly thinks it did not as football fans flooded the microblogging site with tweets, targeting the opening ceremony that failed to live up to the expectations.

The much awaited and hyped opening ceremony turned out to be disastrous precursor for the World Cup opener between hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia. Russia is spending more than $13 billion (11 billion euros) on hosting football's showpiece, the most important event in the country since the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics. However, the start wasn’t up to the mark to say the least.

Here are some of the tweets that may force you to hold your tummy

Here’s why the netizens are right in their assessment

The opening ceremony started with former Spain World Cup winning captain Iker Casillas unveiling the trophy with Russian supermodel and philanthropist Natalia Vodianova. The problem was the unnecessary usage treasure-hunt like box. Apparently, the eight-corner trunk, made by Louis Vuitton is made with laser-engraved Monogram Titanium but the purpose of it in during the unveiling of the trophy was something very few could comprehend.

Next up was the ‘interactive session’ between British Pop star Robbie Williams, Brazilian legend Ronaldo and a kid. The interaction turned out to be mere handshake and some words, which hardly had any significance in the ceremony.

Robbie Williams then performed to some of his famous numbers, which were not so famous to the world outside Europe. He was soon joined by Russian sensation Aida Garifullina, the only two minutes that were watchable in the entire opening ceremony.

Surprisingly, while Robbie Williams was singing Rock DJ, the performers behind him were busy dismantling the set-up. So much for the most famous British Pop star.

And finally, the official first kick that was missed by majority of the 80 thousand present in the Luzhniki Stadium and by millions across the globe. Ronaldo passed the ball to the mascot, Zabivaka. This was “a symbolic first kick”. Blink and you missed it.

let's hope the football will be better...
