"Considering the current situation with the coronavirus outbreak and in order to protect the health and safety of players, coaches, officials and fans, FIBA today has announced that all FIBA competitions are suspended as of tomorrow, Friday, 13 March 2020," read a FIBA press release.
FIBA added that it will continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis and will evaluate the options for the resumption of competitions as the situation allows.
Earlier in the day, the National Basketball Association (NBA) suspended its season after a player preliminary tested positive for coronavirus. The development came to light after the NBA game between the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder was abruptly postponed on Wednesday night.
"The NBA is suspending game play following the conclusion of tonight's schedule of games until further notice," the NBA said in a statement. "The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic."
