The West Indies vs South Africa 1st Test ended in a draw at the Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad in a rain-affected game. Several overs were lost due to the rain which contributed to the draw. Notably, The draw helps both South Africa and West Indies enhance their points percentage in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 rankings, but their rankings stay the same.
South Africa, having won the toss, chose to bat first and scored 357 in an innings. Temba Bavuma (86) and Tony de Zorzi (78) were the standout performers with the bat.

In response, West Indies reached 145-4 by the end of day three. Day four saw only two hours of play, during which West Indies lost their remaining six wickets, while South Africa managed 30-0 in five overs, taking a lead of 154 runs.
On the final day, the Proteas batted aggressively and declared before lunch to set West Indies a target of 298 for victory. West Indies, with the help of a partnership between Alick Athanaze and Kevem Hodge, West Indies secured a draw.
Coming to the WTC 2023-25 rankings, South Africa remain in 7th place, while West Indies continue to occupy the bottom spot.

What South Africa Need To Reach WTC Final
To reach the WTC final, South Africa need to surpass either India or Australia in the rankings. Surpassing Australia is the more feasible target since India are currently ranked higher and will play Australia later in the cycle, having beaten them in their last four series. South Africa have four remaining series, each consisting of two Tests. They are expected to win their upcoming home series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka and should also perform well in the West Indies, where they previously won 2-0 in their last two series. The challenging tour will be to Bangladesh, where South Africa as Bangladesh are known to give tough fight to SENA countries in their homeland. If South Africa win seven out of eight remaining Tests and lose one, they could surpass Australia with a points percentage of 66.67.
