In a dramatic turn of events, India defeated Australia by 6 wickets in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi to go 2-0 up in the four-match Test series. When Australia ended Day 2, the scoreboard read 61/1 with the visitors leading by 62 runs and while there was a remote possibility that the match would day on the third itself, most didn't expect what did unfold at the cricket pitch on Sunday.
The Men in Blue took the last 9 Australian wickets for 48 runs with Ravindra Jadeja wreaking absolute havoc with his left-arm spin, registering his career-best figures of 7/42. Ravichandran Ashwin was the other wicket-taker for India as he scalped 3 wickets for 59 runs. Marnus Labuschagne emerged as the top run-getter in the Australian innings as he scored 35 off 50 but that wasn't enough to challenge India's star-studded line-up in the fourth innings in their own batting conditions.
Despite losing KL Rahul early, India crossed the winning line 4 wickets down, with Cheteshwar Pujara remaining unbeaten on 31 and Rohit Sharma also scoring as many runs in the innings. Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy did put some pressure on the hosts but Australia just didn't have enough runs on the board.
The win has helped India consolidate their second position at the World Test Championship table. Despite the defeat though, Australia continue to remain at the top of the WTC table with a PCT of 66.67. India are second with a PCT of 64.06 and Sri Lanka third at a PCT of 53.33. South Africa and England having a PCT of 48.72 and 46.97 respectively, take the third and the fourth position on the WTC table.
India and Australia will face off in the third Test match in Indore starting from March 01.
