The first men's T20 International match was played between Australia and New Zealand on 17th February 2005. This format of cricket was a huge hit among the fans and its popularity skyrocketed soon. After this, the International Cricket Council (ICC) organized the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2007. Since then, a total of six T20 World Cups have been played. West Indies have won the T20 World Cup title twice.
The T20 World Cup was held in South Africa in 2007, England in 2009, West Indies in 2010, Sri Lanka in 2012, Bangladesh in 2014, and India in 2016. It couldn't be held as planned in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. It is now set to be played in the UAE from 17th October. 1. 2007 T20 World Cup (Winner: India)
The Indian team won the inaugural T20 World Cup, beating Pakistan by 5 runs in the final in Johannesburg. Team India became the world champion under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
2. 2009 T20 World Cup (Winner: Pakistan)
In 2009, the T20 World Cup was played in England. Pakistan won the title by defeating Sri Lanka by 9 wickets in the final, under the captaincy of Younis Khan. The team has never been able to reach the finals since then.
3. 2010 T20 World Cup (Winner: England)
In 2010, the T20 World Cup was hosted by the West Indies. This time, England was the victorious team, beating Australia in the final.
4. 2012 T20 World Cup (Winner: West Indies)
Sri Lanka hosted the 2012 T20 World Cup. The final was played between West Indies and Sri Lanka, with the former winning the game. West Indies won the T20 World Cup title for the first time under Daren Sammy's leadership.
5. 2014 T20 World Cup (Winner: Sri Lanka)
The 2014 edition was played in Bangladesh. India and Sri Lanka reached the final stage of the tournament. India had to face defeat in the final and Sri Lanka won the match by 6 wickets.
6. 2016 T20 World Cup (Winner: West Indies)
The last T20 World Cup was played in India in 2016. The 2020 edition was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the 2016 final, West Indies defeated England by 4 wickets in Kolkata to win the sixth T20 World Cup. This was the second time that West Indies won the title.
