New Delhi: A six-match long defeat run forced St Lucia Stars to sack Darren Sammy and appoint Australia’s Shane Watson as the captain for the remainder of Caribbean Premiere League 2017.

Middle order batsman Marlon Samuels will take over as the vice-captain of the side, which has all but lost hopes of making it to the knockouts.

The former West Indies captain had led the Stars for 40 matches in 5 seasons. The Stars management maintained that the decision to change the captain was only in pursuit of a fresh mindset and got nothing to do with Sammy’s form.

"If it were not for Daren, St Lucian cricket would not have the standing it does in world cricket and his ability to lead both on and off the field remains unquestioned," owner Jay Pandya said. "However, after the results that we have seen over the first half of the 2017 Hero CPL, a change is needed to freshen things up as we look to win the remaining four fixtures this season."

Sammy has been in excellent form in the ongoing CPL but somehow the team has not given results.

Watson on the other hand is a vastly experienced campaigner and has captained sides like the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.
