New Delhi: History suggests an India-England series has never been short of controversies. Whether it was the ‘jelly bean’ incident where Zaheer Khan was targeted or the Jadeja-Anderson banter which carried on for quite some time; sparks fly whenever these two sides meet.
The ongoing series between India and England has certainly lived up to that reputation. At first British media alleged Indian skipper Virat Kohli of ball tampering ahead of the third Test and then Stokes was reprimanded for using fowl language during his on-field argument with Kohli on Day 1.
Day 2 of the third Test at Mohali saw another one of those bizarre incidents which attracted fair bit of discussion time among cricket pundits. It all happened in the final ball of the third over of the Indian innings. Vijay defended a delivery straight back to Anderson and the fast bowler threw it back towards the stumps. Instead of moving away from the line of the throw, Vijay stood his ground without moving an inch. The ball hit his pad and England players unanimously appealed for obstructing the field. The onfield umpires decided against going upstairs and ruled in favour of Vijay. The replays showed Vijay’s foot was outside the crease but what in his favour was that he did not show any attempt to block the throw. Nevertheless the incident was much talked in the commentary box and even in social media.
