Suryakumar Yadav has emerged as one of the finest short-format players in the world in recent times. He has not only played some brilliant innings for India in the T20Is but has also showcased his dynamic batting for his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI). However, the batter was out of competitive cricket for almost four months and underwent sports hernia surgery in January of this year. In an intriguing development, his nutritionist, Shwetha Bhatia, revealed that Suryakumar shed nearly 14-15 kg of weight during his post-surgery transformation.
This transformation is credited to a strict diet and intense strength training regimen by Shwetha Bhatia, founder of 'Mind Your Fitness' and his nutritionist.
Set to play for India in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, Suryakumar recently made his return to cricket after being sidelined from competitive cricket for months after undergoing the surgery in January.

Suryakumar's Remarkable Transformation: Leaner, Stronger and Fitter Than Ever
Shwetha Bhatia expresses that since his return to competitive cricket, Suryakumar Yadav appears leaner and fitter than ever. Much of this transformation can be attributed to a disciplined diet plan and rigorous strength training, which enabled him to shed at least 12-14 kg gained after his sports hernia surgery.
"If you look at him, he is looking much leaner and stronger and little muscular, and diet was planned with supplementation to achieve that goal. Coordination between recovery rate and muscle gain rate, so we adjusted to achieve that in record time," said Shwetha Bhatia,as quoted by PTI.
"Overall by now, 14-15 kg, there was slight increase in his weight after surgery, which is a natural medical reaction not because he was off diet," Bhatia explained. "Out of 15 kg that he shed, Dexa machine will confirm that 13 kg will be fat," she added.
Suryakumar Yadav's Recovery Journey
Shwetha emphasised that following Suryakumar's injury, they intensified his diet plan while prioritising his recovery with vitamin supplements. With Suryakumar undergoing strength training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), the focus was on facilitating his comeback. She also says that coordination with the NCA regarding his recovery rate was essential to ensure progress and avoid setbacks.
"Post his injury, we made his diet plan a bit stricter, because when there is no activity, you don't increase food directly like that but there was more focus on his recovery with vitamin supplements. He was at National Cricket Academy, more strength training was incorporated so that he has a better comeback. We don't get into his rehab programme but we need to coordinate with NCA in terms of his recovery rate because if it is going slow then it is falling short somewhere.”
