Cricketer-turned-coaches Mahela Jayawardene and Chris Silverwood resigned from their positions as Consultant Coach and Head Coach, respectively, following the T20 World Cup 2024 debacle.
Sri Lanka won just one out of their four T20 World Cup group stage matches. The Lankan Lions began their campaign with back-to-back crushing defeats at the hands of South Africa and Bangladesh. Their third group stage match against Nepal was called off due to rain without a ball being bowled, resulting in their early elimination from the tournament.

Sri Lanka's only win in the T20 World Cup 2024 came in their fourth and final group stage game against the Netherlands, which they won by 83 runs. As a result, Sri Lanka failed to make it to the Super 8s.
"Jayawardena, during his tenure, helped implement significant changes to the structure of the national team ecosystem and the High-Performance Center," Sri Lanka Cricket said a statement on Wednesday (June 26).
"Sri Lanka Cricket takes this opportunity to wish Mahela all the best in his future endeavors and thank him for the services he rendered during his tenure," they further added.
Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood also resigns
Chris Silverwood's resignation follows Mahela Jayawardene's departure. Silverwood had taken over as head coach of the Sri Lanka men's team in April 2022, shortly after his tenure with the England men's team ended following a 0-4 Ashes series loss in Australia.
"Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones. After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home." Silverwood was quoted as saying in media release by Sri Lanka cricket.
"It has been a real honour for me to be part of Sri Lanka Cricket and I will be taking away many fond memories."
