The BCCI is planning to offer another two-year contract to Rahul Dravid but before that, they want India’s head coach to help the team during the tour of South Africa. Under the coaching of Rahul Dravid, the Indian team ended as runners-up in both the World Test Championship (WTC) and the ODI World Cup. Most of the officials in the BCCI think that extending Dravid’s contract will allow the senior team to have continuity.
"The BCCI secretary Jay Shah has had discussions with Dravid during last week. Obviously, the fine prints of the new contract are yet to be worked out.
"But BCCI wants Dravid to go to South Africa with the Test team," a senior BCCI office-bearer told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
"The contract will be worked out but the Test series is important and even if he doesn't go for the T20I series in SA, he can join (the team) from the ODIs," the source said.
Former India cricketer VVS Laxman is already overburdened as he is looking after the NCA alongside U19 and A team of India.
"Laxman's hands are full with the NCA work plus there's another U19 World Cup coming up. There's A team tour to South Africa.
"He is also involved in cricketing matters with regards to construction of a new NCA facility which is in full swing," the source added.
Rahul Dravid on the other hand has not commented on his decision as he has many offers from IPL teams to become Team Director/Team Mentor which will give him good amount of money with much lesser commitment. It will be intriguing to witness whether BCCI extends David’s contract as the next T20 World Cup is set to take place new year, followed by the Champions Trophy, which is slated to be hosted by Pakistan.
