After India's historic victory in T20 World Cup 2024, seasoned opener Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the T20 format. While he has stepped down from T20Is, Rohit remains the captain of the Indian cricket team in ODIs and Tests. Despite his wish to continue playing, the 37-year-old may be approaching the final stages of his career due to his age.

With Rohit Sharma's future uncertain, the question of who will captain Team India across all formats arises. Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shubman Gill have already had opportunities to lead in Rohit's absence.

Meanwhile, a former Indian cricket legend has named two players who are seen as strong candidates to take on the captaincy in the future.

Former wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, when asked about potential future captains for Team India across all formats, mentioned two names during a Cricbuzz discussion. Karthik identified Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill as the young players with the potential to take on leadership roles for the Indian team in the future.

Karthik pointed out that both Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill have captained in IPL, and Gill has also led the Indian team. He believes that, with time, Gill could have the opportunity to captain India in all three formats.

Shubman Gill is currently leading India A team in Duleep Trophy 2024 and has previously served as vice-captain for the Indian team in both the ODI and T20 series during Sri Lanka tour.

Team India's long break comes to an end when they host Bangladesh in a two-match Test series, starting from September 19 onwards in Chennai. The second Test will take place in Kanpur.
