Mohammed Shami, the star India speedster, was bestowed with the Arjuna Award by president Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on Tuesday (January 9). Shami received the award during the during the National Sports and Adventure Awards 2023. The right-arm fast bowler had a stellar 2023 which included a record-breaking ODI World Cup where he finished with the maximum number of wickets. He scalped 24 wickets in the tournament in just 7 matches, averaging 10.71.
Shami played a key role in India's run up to the final and produced the best figures ever by an Indian bowler on the night of the semifinals against New Zealand. He finished with 7/57 in 9.5 overs as India beat the Kiwis by 70 runs to proceed to the final. However, the hosts ended up losing the summit clash against Australia in a massive heartbreak for fans who were anticipating a third World Cup win for Team India especially because of the way the team had played throughout the tournament being played at their own backyard with the final at the world's largest cricket stadium- the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad- filled with Indian fans.
