Mohammed Shami injury update: In a major setback for Team India, senior pacer Mohammed Shami has been injured once again, severely diminishing his hopes of returning to competitive cricket, Times of India (TOI) reported.

TOI has reported that Mohammed Shami has sustained a side strain injury, which may likely prevent him from participating in the upcoming IND vs AUS Border-Gavaskar Test series.

Shami's side strain injury may be the reason he was not included in Bengal's squad for the upcoming two rounds of the Ranji Trophy. The veteran had bowled in the nets under the supervision of India's bowling coach Morne Morkel during the recent Test series against New Zealand. However, during the first Test in Bengaluru, India captain Rohit Sharma indicated that the team is not looking to rush Shami's return ahead of their tour to Australia.

Shami's recent injury has certainly hampered his comeback, and it remains to be seen how he will recover. If he does not regain fitness soon, his chances of participating in even a single Test of five-match IND vs AUS Border-Gavaskar Trophy could be greatly reduced.

Team India's tour of Australia kicks off with the first Test against Australia on November 22 at Optus Stadium in Burswood.

The 34-year-old was last seen representing India during ODI World Cup last year. After that tournament, he encountered a serious injury that necessitated surgery earlier this year.

It was anticipated that after failing to attain fitness for Bangladesh and New Zealand series, Shami would be fit for IND vs AUS Test series but unfortunately, that did not happen. He was left out of the starting India squad for upcoming Australia tour due to his lack of fitness. Speculation about his incomplete recovery began, and now reports indicate that he has sustained a side strain injury, possibly ruling him out from IND vs AUS Border-Gavaskar series 2024.
