Shubman Gill, who was rested for the home T20 series against Australia, did not get off to the desired start in his comeback match. While he was the team's preferred opener alongside Yashasvi Jasiwal. India lose both of them in the first two overs and were reeling at 6/2 after the conclusion of the second over. Gill was dismissed by Lizaad Williams with a beauty of a delivery. While the batter thought that the ball could be missing the stumps when it crashed on to his pads and went for the Decision Review System (DRS), as it turned out, India lost the review as well

However, one thing that attracted the attention of the fans was Williams celebration which seemed to be mocking Gill's 'prince' tag. It is pertinent to note that while star India batter Virat Kohli is referred to as the 'King', Gill is often said to be his successor in Indin cricket and is believed to be the 'Prince'. Taking a jibe at that after removing Gill for a 2-ball duck, Williams animatedly acted out as if he was wearing a crowd, happy to have got the better of the India batter.

India Post 180/7 In 19.3 Overs
Despite the early setbacks though, India revived well enough to manage 180/7 in 19.3 overs after which rain halted the proceedings. The match was then revised to a 15-over chase for South Africa with the Proteas needing 152 to win in those many overs. Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav scored half-centuries for India with Rinku remaining unbeaten on 68 off 39. Suryakumar too was impressive and made 56 off 36.
Gerald Coetzee picked three wickets for South Africa while Marco Jansen, Williams, Tabraiz Shamsi and Aiden Markram picked a wicket each.
