India's opening batsman in Test matches, KL Rahul, has been appointed as the vice-captain of the Test team during the tour of South Africa. KL Rahul has been given the job in absence of Rohit Sharma who is missing the series due to a hamstring injury.
"The All-India Senior selection committee has named KL Rahul as vice-captain for the upcoming 3-match Test series against South Africa,” a BCCI statement said on Saturday.
KL Rahul has been in the sublime form off late and he also has the confidence of captain Virat Kohli, thus, getting the job ahead of Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, and others.
KL Rahul will also be the vice-captain of the Indian team for the upcoming ODI matches against South Africa. The Karnataka batsman has been Punjab Kings' captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the past two years and also is one of the main contenders to lead the new Lucknow franchise for next year.
According to the schedule, the first match of the three-match Test series between India and South Africa will be played in Centurion from December 26. The second match will be played in Johannesburg from January 3 and the third and final match will be played in Cape Town from January 11.
