Gayle's 99-run knock eventually went in vain as Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Ben Stokes scored a whirlwind half ton to help Rajasthan chase down 186-run target and clinch a 7-wicket win and stay afloat in the tournament.
Missing out on yet another hundred in the IPL, Gayle termed his dismissal at 99 as unfortunate but consoled himself and millions of his die hard fans by stating that in his mind he had scored a ton. Gayle was also delighted over the fact that he had reached the 1000-sixes milestone in T20 cricket.
On the cusp of reaching a ton, Gayle expressed his frustrating after a full ball from seamer Jofra Archer hit the pad before crashing into the stumps. Gayle smashed his bat in disgust but later on gave Archer a pat.

If Gayle would have got to the three figure mark, it would have been his maiden hundred of ongoing season and the 7th overall in the Indian Premier League.
Gayle was frustrated after a full ball from Jofra Archer hit the pad before crashing into the stumps. Gayle smashed his bat on the wicket but then gave Archer a pat.
"It was a good knock. I thought 180 is a good total. The wicket is good, and it will get better at the night. Getting out on 99 is unfortunate, but I have been there and done that," Gayle said after getting dismissed on 99.
"It was a good ball. This happens. Still enjoying it out there. Having fun. Oh, 1000 maximums? Another record. Still have to be hitting it well at the age of 41. Got to give thanks for that. To those who wanted a century, I am sorry I missed out today, but in my mind, it is a century, all right?" Gayle added.
