India vs England 1st T20I Live Scorecard
Over 19: Kohli ends it with a six
That's the icing on the cake, a Kohli six to finish the match with 10 balls to spare. India have won the first T20I by 8 wickets to go 1-0 up in the three-match series. This India's 7th consecutive T20I victory.
Over 18: Rahul's 2nd T20I 100
Over 17: Formalities now
Well, Kohli wants to go after the bowling but so far hasn't got anything off the middle. India are walking towards the target in slow motion. Need 14 off 18 now.
Over 16: Kohli fastest to 2000
Over 15: Rashid tightens the screws
Adil Rashid ends his quota of four overs in fine fashion, gives away only 3 runs to keep end up with 1 for 25. But England need wickets, India only 23 away from victory and they have five overs to score from it.
Over 14: Jordan keeps England in the game
Chris Jordan has been the source of light in the darkness that KL Rahul has inflicted in the English bowling line-up. Jordan bowls another brilliant over, concedes just 3 to keep England hanging in the game but only by a thread. He finishes with none for 27 in his four overs.
Over 13: Rashid strikes
England have struck but is it a little too late? Rohit did not the elevation and Morgan at cover takes a simple catch. India only need 29 runs off 42 balls with Rahul still there, oh wait! Virat Kohli has walked out to bat too.
Over 12: Jordan provides sanctity
Chris Jordan puts a hold on Rahul, hits him on the ribs too. Only 5 off it. But England need wickets, who will be the Kuldeep Yadav of England?
Over 11: Rahul goes 6,4,4,6
Where do you bowl to him? Plunkett surely doesn't have the answer. He has been hammered for 20 by KL Rahul. Over cover, over mid off, over square leg, you name it, Rahul has hit Plunkett everywhere. Where is the yorker one must ask Plunkett but as they say, it's easier said than done. We could be in for a really early finish if Rahul (85 off 37) goes on like this. India: 123/1
Over 10: Rahul, you beauty!
What else can you say now? We are running out of adjectives to describe this innings from KL Rahul. We saw improvisation from Buttler and now Rahul is giving it back and perhaps doing it better. First a reverse dissecting the thrid man and point fielder for a four, followed by a monstrous six over long on - 13 runs off the over. India 103/1
Over 9: Rohit's colossal six and Rahul's fifty
KL Rahul can do no wrong tonight. A silcken tap past short third man for a boundary and Rahul has scored his 5th T20I half century, boy he is in some form.
That was a gift for Rohit. A half-trakcer from Adil Rashid and Rohit sits back and hammers it over the mid-wicket boundary for a huge six.
Over 8: A scare for Rahul
It seemed like Jordan had it covered but at the very last moment, the pressure of the boundary rope forces him to tip it over for a six. Rahul and India breath a sigh o relief. By the way, 16 runs came from that over of Moeen Ali. India 78/1
Over 7: First over of spin
Rohit ends the over with a brilliant backfoot punch past the point fielder and into the fence. But Adil Rashid has started well. He has taken a leaf out of Kuldeep's book, bowled it slower and slower through the air, allowing the ball to dip and make the batsman wait. India 60/1
Over 6: A good one from Plunkett
A very good over from Liam Plunkett, only six from it. India end the powerplay at 54 for 1 with Rohit(13) and Rahul(32) going strong. India need 106 runs off 14 overs, should not be much of a problem if one of these batsmen carries through.
Over 5: Rohit joins the act
Rohit has just got going by hitting a couple of boundaries off Chris Jordan - one through point another past mid-off. Jordan did hit Rohit on his left-arm wit one ball but the Indian opener shook it off and made a strong comeback. India: 48/1
Over 4: Plunkett's first goes for 12
Take a bow KL Rahul. He manufactured a shot out of nowhere there. Gives himself room and swats it past point to collect his second boundary of the over. Plunkett can only stand and glare. India 38/1
Over 3: Rahul again stands out
KL Rahul is in the form of his life. After that magnificent six in the previous over, he follows it up with another beautiful cover drive off Willey for a boundary. India are up and running at 26/1
Over 2: A beauty from Rahul
WOW! Stand and admire, that was the shot of the match from KL Rahul. You cannot hit that kind of a shot if you are out of touch and Rahul is from being out of tough. A fuller length delivery from Jordon, Rahul plants his front foot, covers the swing of the ball and lofts it over the cover point region for a six, has to be the shot of the match. India: 17/1
Over 1: Willey gets throuh Dhawan
BOWLED! Shikhar Dhawan drags it on to his stumps, David Willey strikes in is first over, just what the doctor ordered for England. Game on at Old Trafford. India: 8/1
Now then, India have 160 as a target, certainly not a big one, going by India's form and the average of here but you never really know, a few early wickets could set the cat amongst the pigeons.
England innings
Over 20: Brilliant last over from Bhuvi
A great last over from Kumar, two wides in it but only 8 from it. India have restricted England to 159 for 8, this after they had scored 50 runs in the first 5 overs and were 102/2 in 13 overs.
Over 19: Umesh gets another
Jordan bags a first ball duck! An unfortunate dismissal you can say! It is a full toss on middle, an inswinging one. Jordan tries to drive but gets an inside edge onto his boot. The ball lobs up back to the bowler who takes it in his followthrough. Can India now bowl England out?
Over 18: Kuldeep gets Buttler, ends with five-for
Butttler not lucky the second time, Virat Kohli makes no mistake at log on to end a brilliant innings from Jos Buttler(69). But what about Kuldeep Yadav? He becomes the first left-arm wrist spinner to take five wickets in T20 internationals. England 148/7
Over 17: England gain momentum
12 runs plus 2 leg byes in this Bhuvneshwar Kumar over gives some momentum to the dying England innings. Willey uses the long handle to hit him for two boundaries. England 137/6
Over 16: Pandya strikes
England are falling apart and Buttler can only stand and watch. Hardik Pandya gets his name into the wickets column, a short pitched delivery aagain accounts for Moeen Ali for 6. England 117/6
Over 15: Umesh bowls a 3-run over
Not even Butttler can do anything now. India are all over England at the moment. After a three-wicket over from Kuldeep, Umesh bowls a three-run over. England 112/5
Over 14: Three wicets in one over for Kuldeep
We need a moment to catch our breath. Kuldeep Yadav has just completed a three-wicket over, accounting for Morgan (7), Bairstow (0), Root (0). England 109/5. Buttler holds the key for England surely now.
No clue, no clue whatsoever. Johnny Bairstow and Joe Root came in went back to pavilion in the same pace. Identical dismissals, Kuldeep bowls a wrong'un twice and both Root and Bairstow just played around it, Dhoni stumbles slightly in Root's case but completes the stumpings with ease on both occasions.
That was miles up in the air but Kohli makes no mistake. Kuldeep Yadav has struck again and this time it's the England captain, Eoin Morgan, who is out while attempting a slog sweep for 7.
Over 13: Chahal ends with 0/34
That's a very good finish from Chahal. After conceding 16 in his first over he has made a strong comeback, giving only 18 runs in his next three overs. this over goes for 6 runs. England 106/2
Over 12: Kuldeep ends Hales'struggle
It was on the cards says Harsha Bhogle and surely it was. Alex Hales just did not turn up today. He just couldn't get off the blocks and Kuldeep takes full advantage of it. Hales tries to go for the slog sweep but exposes his stumps and the ball crashes on to it. England: 100/2
Over 11: Buttler goes 4,6,4 and FIFTY
Was it the lull before the storm? Buttler just launches into Pandya to bring up his FIFTY. 18 runs coming from Pandya's thrid over, his figures get a beating and England are back on track. England 95/1
Over 10: Kuldeep's fine start
Terrific over from Kuldeep. His first ball went for a boundary and the next five went for 1 run, four dot balls in it and that too to a rampaging Buttler. Well, all of a sudden hitting sixes are not that easy any more for Buttler and England. Since the first wicket of Roy, they have scored only 27 runs in 5 overs.
Over 9: Buttler brings out the reverse sweep
Buttler attempts the reverse sweep twice, gets a four off the first one and only a single off the second. Another good over from Chahal, only six runs from it, and three dot balls, England need a move on now at 72/1
Over 8: Hales struggling
Buttler punishes the miscued slower one from Pandya for four to break the shackles but India have got a straglehold on England, particularly on Hales, who is batting on 4 off 10 deliveries, struggling to get going against Pandya and Chahal. England 66/1
Over 7: Chahal comes back
After conceeding 16 runs in his first over, Chahal makes a strong comeback, giving only six runs off his second. Only 15 runs coming in the last three overs including the wicket of Roy. England 59/1
Over 6: Most economical over
Hardik Pandya's first over and the last one of the powerplay yields only 3 runs - the best over for India so far. The Roy wicket has done wonders. Pandya has bowled three consecutive dot balls to the new man Alex Hales. But England won't be too worried, they are at 53/1 (Buttler 23, Hales 0)
Over 5: Umesh cleans up Roy
Chopped on! Jason Roy (30) was flirting with danger right from the beginning, had a few play and misses but not this time. Umesh Yadav bangs it in, Roy goes for the pull, ends up getting an under edge and it crashes on to his stumps. Umesh Yadav is overjoyed. India have their first breakthrough. England 50/1
Over 4: England openers deal with spin
Buttler comes down the track and belts it over long on for the 1ST SIX of the series and follows it up with a thunderous back foot punch past cover for a boundary. England are here to score and it doesn't matter whether it's spin or space. The first over of wrist spin bowled by Chahal goes for 16 runs. England are off to a flier at 44/0
Over 3: Kumar bowls without luck
There were three play and misses and one streaky boundary over short-thirdman, which could have easily resulted in India's first wicket. Bhuvneshwar Kumar aided with his knuckle ball, shows what a shrewd operator he can be. Roy and England though, still pick up 8 runs from it without the loss of any wicket. England: 28/0
Over 2: Oh my Buttler!
What was that? Just the third ball off Buttler's innings and he laps it over fine leg for a four. It almost went for a six. Umesh Yadav's first over too yeilds 10 runs. England 20/0
Over 1: Jason Roy on the charge
How good is that shot and how good is this pitch? Jason Roy just walks across the stumps to flick India's best bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a boundary over square leg. England have got two boundaries in the first over. England: 10/0 after 1 over.
England (Playing XI): Jason Roy, Jos Buttler(w), Alex Hales, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett
India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli(c), Suresh Raina, Lokesh Rahul, MS Dhoni(w), Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal
Team News: Dhoni and Dhawan are back quiet expectedly and KL Rahul holds on to his place, meaning Manish Pandey misses out and Kohli will bat at 4? We'll have to wait and see for that.
Toss:India won the toss and opted to bowl first against England at Old Trafford
How's the pitch looking
Pitch looks a batting paradise, no grass covering whatsoever, just stand and deliver kind for the batsmen. Pitch should stay the same in the second innings too, meaning that we are in for a high scoring encounter.
India arrive at Old Trafford
Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the India vs England 1st T20I at Old Trafford.
The Preview
Fresh from a relatively easy 2-0 whitewash over minnows Ireland, India's real test on the tour will start on Tuesday when the Virat Kohli-led brigade will be up against a formidable England side in the first of the three-match Twenty20 International series at the Old Trafford here.
While India has been a consistent limited overs side over the past 6-7 years, England has of late lifted their game in coloured clothes by miles, thanks to a group of fantastic limited overs players like Jos Buttler, Jason Roy and Ben Stokes.
Going by current form, both sides are at par on paper, with India having won 15 of their last 20 T20 Internationals, including the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka and the bilateral away series against South Africa.
England, on the other hand, will head to the series on the back of a 6-0 drubbing of Australia with Buttler, Roy, Jonny Bairstow in good form.
Regrouping after almost a three-month long gap, India used the Ireland T20Is as a good warm-up, registering facile wins of 72 and 143 runs but more importantly giving the whole squad good game time before the challenging series against the Englishmen.
Going into Tuesday's series opener, India is expected to play around with set combinations which means Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma teaming up at the top of the order.
With veteran Suresh Raina in great hitting form at No.3, and skipper Kohli at No.4, it will be interesting to see if the team management includes the in-form Lokesh Rahul in the middle order.
All eyes will also be on the former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was in great touch in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for eventual champions Chennai Super Kings.
On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah's thumb injury will be a concern as he has played a big role with his death overs bowling.
It will be interesting to see whether his replacement, Deepak Chahar, gets his maiden cap even though senior pro Umesh Yadav looks a more likely replacement.
Wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal have proven their worth in Ireland and look certain to play.
England, meanwhile, made a few strategic changes by putting assistant coach Paul Farbrace in charge of the T20 team for the Australia and India series, while head coach Trevor Bayliss simultaneously took to domestic cricket scouting.
England's recent ploy to promote Jos Buttler as an opener worked in fine fashion as he struck the quickest T20I half-century by an English batsman, with a 22-ball 50, that included six fours and five sixes against the hapless Kangaroos.
Buttler continued from where he left in the IPL, where he struck five successive half-centuries for the Rajasthan Royals and finished the tournament with 548 runs from 13 matches at a strike-rate of 155.24.
Needless to say, he will be India's greatest threat, albeit the likes of Roy and Alex Hales also add a lot of firepower to the English top-order.
