West Indian opener Chris Gayle rewrote the record books when Windies locked horns with India in the second ODI of the three-match series at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad on Sunday. The hard-hitting batsman surpassed legendary Brian Lara's ODI run tally to become the highest run-getter for West Indies in the 50-overs format.

Gayle, who needed just 7 runs to eclipse Lara's long standing record, achieved the milestone in the 8th over of the West Indies chase. He was eventually dismissed for 11 by Khaleel Ahmed. India eventually inflicted a 59-run win over the Windies in a rain hit match and took a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series.

In his stellar career, Lara had amassed 10348 runs in 295 ODIs for the Windies. Gayle now leads the run scoring charts for the West Indies in ODI cricket with 10,353 runs in 297 ODIs.

Gayle also became the first West Indian player to play 300 one day internationals. He overtook Brian Lara' record of 299 ODIs, the most by a Windies cricketer in the limited overs format. Gayle is the highest ton maker and leading six hitter for his nation in ODI cricket.
