IND vs SL Asia Cup 2023 Match, Dunith Wellalage record: Sri Lankan cricket team's 20-year-old spinner Dunith Wellalage succeeded in taking five wickets for 40 runs in the ongoing India vs Sri Lanka Asia Cup 2023 Super Fours match at R. Premadasa Stadium on Tuesday (September 12). By the virtue of this feat, Wellalage made a special record. He became the youngest bowler to take five wickets for Sri Lanka in ODIs. Earlier, Sri Lanka's Charita Buddhika (Right-arm fast-medium bowler) held this record.


Charita Buddhika was successful in taking 5 wickets against Zimbabwe in the year 2001 when he was 21 years old. Dunith Vellallage, who surpassed Charita Buddhika, today, is currently 20 years old. Afghanistan's Mujeeb Ur Rahman is the youngest wicket-taker in history of ODI cricket to take 5 wickets. Mujeeb took a 5-wicket haul at the age of 16 years and 325 days.


In today's match against India, 20-year-old Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage was successful in dismissing Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya as he ended up taking 5 wickets for the first time in ODIs.

Dunith Wellalage is a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. Colombo is the home ground of this talented youngster. He was born in the year 2003 and has played for Sri Lanka Under-19 and Sri Lanka A cricket teams. He is often compared to Lankan spinner Rangana Herath due to similar bowling style.


This 20-year-old Lankan spinner had impressed everyone with his bowling in the Lanka Premier League. So far, Wellalage has played 12 matches in ODIs and has taken a total of 13 wickets. He made his ODI debut in the year 2022 with a match against Australia.
