IND vs SA HIGHLIGHTS: India Beat South Africa By 243 Runs For Eighth Straight Win In World Cup 2023
IND vs SA HIGHLIGHTS, World Cup 2023: India's eighth straight win in World Cup 2023 means they will now finish as the table toppers, no matter what happens in their match against Netherlands.
That brings the curtain down on our coverage of the IND vs SA, World Cup 2023 fixture at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India win and guarantee themselves the table-topper position with 16 points from 8 matches. South Africa, meanwhile, remain at the second place and need to get this result out of their system since there is a possibility that the two teams might meet again in the business end of the tournament. Thank you so much for joining us. Good night from all of us at ABP LIVE.
An emotional moment really for me as well, as the match comes to an end and India equal their biggest winning spree in World Cups with eight wins in a row. But there is something different about this team in the manner in which they have gone about the game. There is a fear that the team might have peaked early but they have found a way to improve game after game. The clarity in their mindset is mind blowing. The team is on a mission on the World Cup and following their dominant win over the Proteas in Kolkata on Sunday (November 5), there is every reason to believe that they can. They are set to finish number 1 on the table irrespective of the result of their last round-robin stage since no other team can reach 16 points.
They won the toss, elected to bat first against South Africa and boy did Rohit Sharma look like he was batting on a different surface. The blistering start was key to India posting 326/5. Virat Kohli scored a dream record-equalling hundred on his birthday while Shreyas Iyer scored his second successive half-century and Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja scored useful cameos. Jaddu then returned to scalp a fifer and break South African batting spine after the early damage was done by Mohammed Siraj who removed in-form Quinton De Kock early. Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets apiece as India completed yet another dominant win.
Kohli was adjuged the Player Of the Match and ensured that his 35th birthday is rememberd for years to come as the day he levelled cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar's one thought as impossible to achieve 49 ODI hundreds.
India win by 243 runs. KUldeep gets the last wicket. India bowl South Africa out for 83. And so India guarantee themselves the number 1 position on the table.
Yet another man leaving his impact in the tournament for India. After his cameo with the bat, Jadeja has scalped a fifer. Rabada is out caught and bowled. SA- 79/9 after 26.2 Overs.
And so Kuldeep gets a wicket. The slowish nature of the pitch coming to the fore as Jansen chips that in the air for an easy catch to Jadeja. SA- 79/8 after 25.4 Overs.
20 Overs Bowled. SA- 69/7. But seems like only a matter of time before the innings gets wrapped up and India complete eighth straight win this World Cup.
Lovely from Jaddu. Again dipping in and leaving the right-handed batter past his edge to rattle his stumps. SA- 67/7 after 18.4 Overs. WOW! Is this a dream or what? Please don't shatter this, that's what every Indian fan must be thinking at this stage. Jadeja has 4/27 already.
Kuldeep Yadav Into The Attack with the match already in India's pocket. Surely seems like India's tournament from here, given the way they have dominated every other team so far.
Jansen, Maharaj batting in the middle for the Proteas.
Miller departs. Getting bad to worse for South Africa. Tries the paddle sweep and misses but Jadeja doesn't as stumps are perturbed. SA- 59/6 after 16.3 Overs.
Shami deserves so much praise for being absolutely ready despite not being India's preferred choice to begin. He picked 5, 4 and 5 wickets in his first 3 matches respectively and already has 2 here in Kolkata. Here he comes running in for his fourth over.
Shami to begin proceedings post the drinks Interval.
Four To End The Over from the bat of Miller. Two boundaries in that over but SA far behind in this game. SA- 52/5 after 15 overs. They need 275 from 35 overs. DRINKS BREAK. David Miller- 10* off 7, Marco Jansen- 2* off 5.
2 Runs And A Wicket in this over from Shami. Man, running out of adjectives here to describe the performance from the Indian bowlers this tournament.
This time Shami wants the review and gets the wicket. Rassie van der Dussen falls for 13 off 32. SA- 40/5 after 13.1 overs.
Jadeja Gets Another and it's Klaasen who departs LBW after insisting that the team should go for the review. SA- 40/4 after 12.5 overs.
Shami gets a wicket first over, yet again. What a tournament this has been for him already. Can he continue this all the way through to the finals? He has got one to seam away just a bit after coming in with the angle from over the way. Markram plays at it and only manages an edge. Rahul completes the catch. SA- 35/3 after 9.5 Overs.
It's a double change from Rohit. SA- 27/2 after 9 overs. Shami to bowl the 10th.
Jadeja comes, Jadeja strikes. Captain Rohit Sharma's move yields result yet again this World Cup 2023. Third ball of the over, it comes in with the angle but turns past the outside edge of Bavuma to rattle his stumps. SA- 22/2 after 8.3 Overs. Bavuma walks back for 11 off 19.
Left arm spinner, Ravindra Jadeja Comes Into The Attack. After 8 overs, SA- 21/1. Jadeja bowling the 9th over.
Siraj it is from the other end. Shami will have to wait. Incredible from the Indian seamers throughout this World Cup, how they have managed to ask questions match after match. END OF OVER 6. SA- 19/1.
Beautiful Drive From Bavuma in that Bumrah over which goes for 5. SA- 17/1 after 5 overs.
5 off the Siraj over. SA- 12/1.
Couple Of Balls Drifting Down Leg in that over. Runs but no boundaries.
Siraj To Continue and why not after that wicket. Enjoying this pace trio.
Some tough questions posed by Bumrah in that over. Van der Dussen currently has no answer.
A successful one for IND. SA- 6/1 after 2 overs. Rassie van der Dussen is in at 3.
Siraj strikes. The Man in Form Departs. It's an early wicket for India once again as a ball pitch a bit on the shorter side is dragged on to the stumps with an inside edge of the De Kock. SA-6/1 after 1.4 overs.
Beautifully timed down the ground from De Kock for a four. Bit fuller in length.
Siraj From Other End. Love being in an era where every seamer looks to be a wicket-taking option for the captain.
Good Start from Bumrah and India. 2/0 after the opening over.
Bumrah Vs De Kock. Some contest this. De Kock has smashed four hundreds in this World Cup already.
South Africa's Run Chase Begins. Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma open the innings. Jasprit Bumrah with the new ball in hand for India.
What a day to be alive and privilege to be able to cover the game. IND finish at 326/5 and it seems to be on a tricky surface. Everyone played their role to perfection. Not to forget Shreyas Iyer's 77 or Rohit's 40 off 24 at the top. Even Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja with contributions worth 22 off 14 and 29 * off 15 were extremely useful. For South Africa, Keshav Maharaj bowled his 10 overs for 1 for 30, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada and Tabraiz Shamsi but only Rabada among them bowled at an economy of under 6, conceding 48 runs in his 10 overs. Jansen went for 94 runs in his 9.4 overs. Ngidi walked out injured after 63 from 8.2 overs. We will be back with the chase.
INDIA FINISH AT 326/5. Kohli the stand out with 101* off 121.
FOUR MORE! Jadeja has unleashed a wide range of strokes today and looks in the mood.
FOUR DOWN THE GROUND. It's Jadeja again as Jansen is finishing the over started by Ngidi.
Ngidi walks off. Once again he is experiencing some pain. He is walking back now. Not good signs for South Africa. Forget the remaining over, they would be worried about the remaining tournament.
Jadeja joins the party. Deposited into the stands over wide long-on, mid-on region.
Century Number 49 In One Day Internationals For Virat Kohli. It's come on his 35th birthday. What an occasion. What an honour to be bringing live updates for all you for this match and witnessing Kohli's career over the years. End Of Over 49. IND- 309/5 after 49 overs.
FOUR FROM JADEJA to start the 49th over.
300 Up for India. That's the score at the end of 48 overs for the loss of 5 wickets. Kohli on 99.
IND- 293/5 after 47 overs.
FOUR through the covers And Kohli Moves TO 97. Will we witness a historic hundred today at Eden Gardens?
Rabada bowling the 47th over. How many more can India add to the total?
It's off the gloves of SKY and De Kock has just taken a great diving catch to end his stay at the wicket. He tried the reverse there but couldn't quite execute it. Shamsi gets a wicket. IND- 285/5 after 46 overs. Ravindra Jadeja walks in. Kohli on 91*.
It's not all power and innovation, this is old school cut by SKY for a boundary through point.
Kohli Into The 90s now.
Shami Gets Another Over. SKY vs Shamsi will be the key.
There was width on offer and SKY took the aerial route to clear the inner ring and time that shot for a boundary in the long on region. After 45 overs, IND- 278/4.
SKY misses out on the free hit but hits the next ball past mid on for four. Sweetly timed and in proper control from India's Mr 360.
It's A No Ball from Jansen. Free hit loading for Suryakumar.
FOUR TO BEGIN 45th over now. It's Kohli who kind of clips it towards the on side and gets a boundary. Jansen the bowler.
Another four to end the over and it's a typical SKY sweep that makes it 9 runs off the over. IND- 262/4 after 44 overs.
Shamsi to SKY interesting contest on the cards.
Suryakumar Yadav Starts With A FOUR. Width on offer and SKY punishes. Boundary to end the over. IND- 253/4 after 43 overs.
KL Rahul fails to make an impact with the bat today. Doesn't quite time that flick on the on side but a brilliant running catch from Rassie at the square leg fence. Jansen gets a wicket. IND- 249/4 after 42.1 Overs.
6 Off The 42nd over then despite the extras. IND- 249/3 after 42 overs.
Gets Away With A Free Hit after a wide and a no-ball to start the over to Kohli.
Shamsi Into The Attack. Surely, Indian bowlers might look to target him from here.
Good phase Of Play this for the Proteas. Once again a quiet over. 4 off it. IND- 243/3 after 41 overs.
Jansen back to start the final powerplay with the option of five fielders guarding the fence. Off day For Jansen so far.
Just 3 off the 40th which means 6 runs off the last two overs. IND- 239/3 after 40 overs. They are going at a run rate of 5.97.
Rabada bowling his eighth. Shamsi will have to bowl a few overs at the death by the looks of it.
Top Over That from Ngidi and a brilliant yorker to finish it off. India manage just 3 runs. They are 236/3 after 39 overs.
Ngidi receiving some treatment in the middle midway through the over. The first three balls have gone for 1, 0 and 1. He has got 2.3 overs remaining in his spell in this match. Looks like he is good to go for now.
Ngidi into his eighth over then.
Kohli Goes Past 500 Runs In this World Cup. His best-ever tally in a single edition of a World Cup. He is into his 70s at the moment.
6 Came Off The 38th Over. IND- 233/3.
FOUR to start Rabada's over. Drifting down leg with fine leg inside the circle and someone of Kohli's class just doesn't miss out on those.
KL Rahul joins Kohli. IND- 227/3 after 37 overs.
Shreyas Iyer falls for 77 off 87, trying to go for the big shot is caught. Ngidi gets the wicket. IND- 227/3 after 36.5 Overs.
FOUR! Iyer has belted that towards the midiwcket regions to start the over with a boundary. It's Ngidi who will face the heat.
Four Came Off That Rabada over then. IND- 223/2 after 36 overs.
Rabada, the best South African pacer so far in this innings, returns for a second spell.
6 Runs Off The 35th Then. IND- 219/2 after 35 overs.
Ngidi returns for a spell. And four past mid on from Kohli. That was the first boundary by Kohli against a spinner in the last over. He has shown some real patience and so has Iyer before they are reaping the rewards now.
14 Off The Over Then. That's more like from India. First a boundary by Kohli and then a six by Iyer. Both on two deliveries dragged down by Aiden Markram. IND- 213/2 after 34 overs.
200 Up For India. Into The 34th over.
Three singles off the 33rd over then. Much better from Jansen but still no wicket. IND-199/2 after 33 overs.
Jansen Running In To Bowl His Sixth Over, the first post the drinks interval. Can he improve his figures?
So just 3 off the 32nd over. IND- 196/2 after 32 overs. TIME FOR DRINKS. Virat Kohli- 55*, Shreyas Iyer- 60*. Rabada, Maharaj the wicket-takers for SA so far.
Markram into the attack for the first time in this innings.
Jansen's Poor Day Out Continues. Flat-batted shot aced through the covers off the fourth ball and then a boundary on the on side through the pull to end the over. 14 runs off it. IND-193/2 after 31 overs. Marco Jansen has now conceded 57 runs off his 5 overs. 100 of the partnership has also come up off 129 balls.
Back-To-Back Fifties For Iyer. Gets there off 64 balls and with the help of a boundary as Marco Jansen returns to the attack. Reaping some rewards for being patient.
9 Off Shamsi's Sixth Over after a boundary first ball by Iyer. IND- 179/2 after 30 overs. Ominous signs For the Proteas.
10-0-30-1 that's Maharaj's figures in a match where South Africa look set to chase over 300. That tells a story in itself. IND- 170/2 after 29 overs.
Fifty For Birthday Boy Kohli off 67 balls. Can he get to the record-equalling ton today?
Maharaj Will Finish Off here. Bowling his final over.
Good Over From India. They get 10 runs off the over with the help of that six. IND-163/2 after 28 overs. Kohli on 49. Iyer will face the first ball.
There you go! SIX!! Strike rate concerns shattered as Iyer goes down the ground for a maximum.
Maharaj Finishes His 9th. Concedes 2 off it. Indian batters mindful that he now has an over remaining. Happy to show respect to him. IND- 153/2 after 27 overs.
8 Off The Shamsi over. Without a boundary. IND- 151/2 after 26 overs.
Spinners Operating At Both Ends for India still and why not they have looked in control but the Indians are just happy to see them through and wait for the pacers to return. The time was guaranteed because of the blazing start India had.
25 overs done. IND- 143/2. Virat Kohli- 42* off 56, Shreyas Iyer- 24* off 46.
Maharaj Continuing. Has been a superb spell of bowling this, even though the Indian pair completes a half-century stand it's come off over 80 deliveries.
Over extra-cover goes Iyer to find a boundary. Very important boundary that for India. IND- 141/2 after 24 overs.
IND-134/2 after 23 overs. Just a single off it. Mahara, 7 overs 1 for 19. Incredible!
6 Off The Over with the help of that boundary. IND- 133/2 after 22 overs.
Second Boundary Since The 11th Over. Just a tickle from the bat of Iyer. Much needed for India and Iyer.
The spinners have bowled really well so far but the Indian spinners operating later this evening will have to deal with dew which could be a slight disadvantage to them.
South Africa Lose A Review. They thought Kohli had edged it to the keeper but the replays confirmed otherwise. Maharaj on top of his game here.
Maharaj To Continue, 5 overs 1 for 15 to continue.
Iyer's strike rate could be a matter of concern. Batting at 32.35 at the moment after 20 overs. He has scored 11 off 34. 124/2 after 20 overs. Shamsi concedes 3 off his first over.
Tabraiz Shamsi into the attack for the first time in this match.
3 Singles To End The 19th over. Maharaj's 5 overs have gone for just 15. Wonder what's going on these two batters' heads as the run rate dips to around 6. IND- 121/2 after 19 overs.
7 off the over then. IND- 118/2 after 18 overs.
And here's the boundary. It's come off the bat of Kohli who has cut it away for a boundary. Much needed for India to continue their hold in this game.
Ngidi From The Other End. Beats Kohli on the off-cutter.
Four Singles Off The first over after the drinks break. The bondaries have clearly dried up for now. IND- 111/2 after 17 overs.
Maharaj to Continue after the drinks break.
Another Quiet Over this. 2 from it. IND- 107/2 after 16 overs and it's DRINKS. Virat Kohli- 25* off 26, Shreyas Iyer- 8* off 22. Rohit- 40 off 24, Shubman Gill- 23 off 24 the batters dismissed by Rabada and Maharaj respectively.
Ngidi returns for a second spell. 3 overs, none for 34 runs so far.
2 Singles Off The Maharaj Over. IND-105/2 after 15 overs. So boundaries have dried up in the last few overs but courtesy of the start, especially after that innings from Rohit, India are going at 7 runs an over.
As the tournament goes deeper, one will realise the importance of what Rohit has been doing at the top of the order with those brisk starts. 4 runs off Rabada's fifth. IND-103/2 after 14 overs.
100's Up for India in 13.1 overs. Long way to go in this innings and the match.
So the two successful bowlers for South Africa bowling well in tandem at the moment. IND- 99/2 after 13 overs. 3 off the 13th over.
Just a couple from that Rabada over then who has been one of the stand out bowlers so far. It came off the bat of Iyer. IND- 96/2 after 12 overs.
Rabada Bowling His Fourth over now. Surely a shot balls is coming against Iyer. What a contest this is already.
3 runs and a wicket off the first over of spin in this fixture. IND- 94/2 after 11 overs.
Shreyas Iyer walks in At 4.
Kehsav Maharaj comes in and strikes in his first over. Gill is in absolute disbelief but will have to walk back as the umpires confirm that he had actually been bowled. Departs for 23 off 24 does Gill. IND- 93/2 after 10.3 overs. Superb ball from the spinner.
END OF POWERPLAY. IND- 91/1 after 10 overs. Have to give it India. The foundation set by Rohit and Gill and then Kohli joined Gill once Rohit fell.
On drive from a master at work. And it's four more as Rabada errs in length with an overpitched ball.
This time Virat wins though. Plays the drive, a bit more aerial that he would have liked, it seemed. But it cleared the fielders and raced to the boundary.
Two Boundaries In The Over. One off the short ball by Gill, one off a fuller length, whipped away by Kohli. 10 off the over. That's the first time this World Cup Jansen goes wicketless inside the powerplay. IND- 82/1 after 9 overs.
Jansen continues for South Africa.
Good Over From Rabada. Couple of times he beat Kohli. Just a boundary in that over. IND- 72/1 after 8 overs.
Off The Mark With a Four. Birthday Boy Virat Kohli with a trademark cover drive off Rabada.
Time For Gill To Take The Aerial Route. Seems like the message is clear as Gill comes down the track for a straight six over long on against Jansen. They are in no mood to let Jansen settle in. Just 6 off the over though. IND- 68/1 after 7 overs.
Successful over. Just 1 leg bye and a wicket from it. IND- 62/1 after 6 overs. Virat Kohli Is At Number 3.
Kagiso Rabada has been introduced in search of a wicket and that is exactly what he delivers. Trying to continue in the same attacking form, Rohit comes down the pitch but does not get the elevation and Bavuma at mid off takes a sharp catch. IND- 62/1 after 5.5 Overs. Rohit falls for 40 off 24.
South African bowlers Ngidi and Jansen looking clueless. Rohit Sharma- 40* off 22, Shubman Gill- 12* off 8. Lungi Ngidi, 3 overs for 34, Jansen 2 overs for 27. IND- 61/0 after 5 overs. Some start this by India.
Short ball and thank you very much Ngidi, says Rohit Sharma as it's another maximum over square leg by the Hitman.
First a slower full toss for a four and then a ball drifting down leg which has been played for a trademark pick up shot for a six. The highest six-hitter in international cricket gets off the mark in Eden Gardens in this innings. The crowd wants him to continue for long.
10 off the over. India- 45/0 after 4 overs. There was perhaps a chance at third man in this over as Rohit threw his bat and slashed on a widish ball but Shamsi couldn't quite grab it.
Fifth boundary already off Rohit's bat. This time he did not get the desired connection but so quick is this outfield is that once it beat the fielders, there was no stopping that. Jansen the hero so far, for South Africa, struggling today. Such is life, such is sport.
The Trademark Rohit pull here is here. Not the full bludgeoned one but gentler one which goes away for a four after a couple of bounces.
And Another Boundary To End The Over. Ngidi was on to his pads and Gill needed no second invitation to use his wrists and find the gap for a boundary on a fast outfield at the Eden Gardens. IND-35/0 after 3 overs. India going at a run rate of 11.66.
Back To Back FOURS! Rohit Sharma means business. He got width on the first occasion and threw his bat at it with all his might. He then found an overpitched ball and lashed on to it with a superb cover drive. What a start this for India.
17 runs coming off that Jansen over. That's cricket. One of the best bowlers in the powerplay in this World Cup just had a nightmarish over to begin with. Probably the occasion, the venue, the fans got to him there. IND- 22/0 after 2 overs.
FOUR! On his pads and Gill has worked it towards the on-side for a boundary. Beautifully timed. India are up and running.
It's another wide drifting down the leg side, Jansen is struggling here in Kolkata.
It continues to be an exceptional over for India as this time around Gill finds the fence. Pierces the off-side field with a beautiful drive for a boundary.
After a good delivery to start off, Jansen has gone off target with a wide ball down the leg side and then a wide that goes for four. He then tried to compensate and bowled a wide outside off. India won't mind this at all.
Here's A Left-Arm Pacer Then. Marco Jansen comes running in from the other end.
An edge off the bat of Rohit that flies and lands safely as Rohit picks up a single to end the first over. IND- 5/0 after 1 over.
Over the top and Rohit gets things underway at the Eden Gardens with a boundary. Interestingly, this is the first time this World Cup an opposition has started with a right-pacer against India.
Here We Go then. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opening the innings for India. Lungi Ngidi to bowl the first over for South Africa. Thanks to Shivam Sharma for setting up the context and this update page for me and now you will be bearing with me, Saurabh Ganguly, for the rest of the game.
India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj
South Africa (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi
Rohit Sharma: We will bat first. Looks like a good pitch, it wasn't to do with the pitch, we wanted to challenge ourselves. It'll be a good game, two teams who have played consistent cricket and have topped the table, will be nice to win and go on top. I love to play over here, not just me, the entire team looks forward to play at this historic ground. We're playing the same team, don't think we need to change anything with the way we've been playing.
Temba Bavuma - We would have batted first, but now we need to chase, which will be a nice challenge. We know that;s one area where we need to gain more confidence, we'll have to bat with responsibility. We have been putting on good consistent performances and we'll look to improve going forward. One change - Shamsi comes in place of Gerald Coetzee.
Rohit Sharma says INDIA will BAT first in Kolkata!
The pitch at Eden Gardens, it favours neither fast bowlers nor the spinners significantly.
India currently lead the points table with 14 points, while South Africa are second with 12 points. South Africa have a better net run rate (+2.290) than India (+2.102), making today's match critical in determining the table topper.
Background
India vs South Africa Live Score: Two of the most consistent teams in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, India and South Africa, are facing off today on November 5 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India are undefeated in seven matches, and South Africa have only lost once in seven games Both the teams have secured a spot in the semi-finals following Pakistan’s victory over New Zealand on November 4. However, the race for the top spot in the table remains open.
India currently lead the points table with 14 points, while South Africa are second with 12 points. South Africa have a better net run rate (+2.290) than India (+2.102), making today's match critical in determining the table topper.
The captains, Rohit Sharma and Temba Bavuma, face a tough decision on whether to play to their strengths or exploit their opponent's weaknesses. South Africa prefer batting first, consistently setting up substantial totals and winning by significant margins. India, on the other hand, prefer chasing a target, as they sometimes struggle when batting first.
This match will test India's five-bowler strategy, especially with Hardik Pandya ruled out. South Africa would aim to capitalise on India's lack of a sixth bowling option.
South Africa's batsmen have been in exceptional form throughout the tournament, with Quinton de Kock leading the run charts with 545 runs in seven matches, including four centuries. However, India's bowlers, particularly the pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj, have been in top form and have taken the most wickets among all teams in the tournament.
Coming to the pitch at Eden Gardens, it favours neither fast bowlers nor the spinners significantly. The weather is expected to be on the warmer side with temperatures reaching 32°C in the afternoon and dew potentially playing a role at night. The Air Quality Index is projected to be around 160.
