Great start to their World Cup opener for Team India. Australia were bowled out for 199. But India were 2/3 at end of 2 overs which is when Rahul and Kohli joined hands. The two added 165 runs for the fourth wicket which ensured India get to a comfortable position from where Rahul and Pandya finished it off. Rahul-97* off 115 balls, Pandya- 11* off 8. Kohli with a super knock as well, making 85 off 116 balls. Josh Hazlewood the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 3/38 in 9 overs. Mitchell Starc- the only other wicket-taker with 1/31 after 8 overs. The difference was perhaps that dropped catch of Kohli when he was on 12. Aussie spinners were also little less effective with dew coming in and Indian batters playing them comfortably. Rahul it is who has been adjudged the Player of the Match.
India win by 6 wickets. They have beaten 5-time champions in their first match of World CUp 2023. A six to finish off things from KL Rahul who has been the start of the innings with an unbeaten 97.
INDIA need 5 to win off 54 balls.
Four follows down the ground. Just 8 needed now.
This time it's KL Rahul off Maxwell.
IND- 182/4. Need 18 runs from 10 overs.
That makes it clear that India are looking at the Net run rate. From Pandya straight off Hazlewoo now that victory looks certain for India, that's more like it.
Hardik Pandya has joined Rahul, by the way. Will India look to finish it off in a hurry now given that net run rate can play a part?

Starc Bouncer Hits Kohli On Helmet there but he gestures that he is alright. Concussion check by the physio. IND-141/3 after 33.4 overs.
A boundary each in the 32nd and the 33rd overs. 15 in the last 2. IND-139/3. Need 61 from 17 overs.
Zampa hasn't been at his best today. Bowl has turned less in the second innings but Zampa hasn't been consistent with his line and lengths either.
Indian now surely sensing a win. IND- 132/3. Need 68 runs from 18 overs
Starc, 1 for 16 off 6, returns for a spell.
Four singles off the 31st over. India- 124/3. India need 76 runs from 114 balls.
Maxwell to resume the proceedings after the second drinks break of the innings. India need 80 runs to win from 120 balls.
Josh Hazlewood (2/19) and Mitchell Starc (1/16) the wicket-takers for Australia so far but they did the damage in the first two overs of the innings itself following which Rahul and Kohli have held the fort for the Men in Blue.
Just a single coming off the 30th over. IND- 120/3. Virat Kohli- 60* off 90 balls. KL Rahul- 54* off 81 deliveries. IT's DRINKS.

There is the pressure-release over. 11 coming off that one delivered by Cummins. IND-116/3 after 28 overs.
No-ball followed by a wide and the free-hit going for a boundary. So India sensing a win here with the Crowd behind them.

Starc And Hazlewood Bowling In Tandem Again. That's the duo that did the magic for Australia in the first two overs. Can they produce a breakthrough again?
IND- 82/3. 2 coming off the Starc over.
Both Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are looking quite comfortable against wrist spinner Zampa. The Australian spinner has failed to exploit the spin-friendly conditions in Chennai like Jadeja did in the first innings.
KL Rahul came up with a sharp late cut against Zampa. He waited for the delivery, and stood at the top of the ball, playing it fine towards the third man for a boundary. He smashed another four in an identical fashion as of the previous delivery.
Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have been batting sensibly and are looking to build a big stand here. Australian bowlers are still ahead in the game as they are bowling with a lot of discipline.
Typical Kohli flick for Boundary and then another boundary on the on-side to finish off the over. IND- 49/3 after 15 overs. 8 coming off the Green over. Virat Kohli- 31* off 51, KL Rahul- 15* off 29. Maxwell keeping it tight. 2 from his second over. India- 35/3 after 12 overs.
Rebuilding phase continues for India and looking solid barring that Kohli drop.
IND- 33/3. 6 coming from that over. A boundary from the bat of Rahul to go with two singles.
Cummins continues for Australia. Nervous faces in the Indian dugout and understandably so.
India- 27/3 at the end of powerplay. Just 1 coming off the first over of spin. India need 173 from 40 overs. This could be a close finish from what it seems like.
Spin for the first time in this innings.
India- 26/3 as Cummins concedes 5 from that over.
1 and almost another wicket from Starc in that over. IND- 21/3 after 8 overs.
Would you believe it? Marsh has dropped Kohli. It went high in the air as Kohli top-edged a pull. Reminded of the 2015 World Cup semifinal at Adelaide Oval but this time around Marsh gives him a life. Keeper and Marsh were running towards each other which is what could have distracted Marsh.
Hazlewood will bowl his fourth over on the trot in this spell.
Cummins concedes 2 off his first over. India- 20/3 after 7 overs.
So Pat Cummins for the first time in this match.
Kohli with an attacking stroke straight down the ground to find his first boundary. Follows it up with a couple. IND- 18/3 after 6 overs.
Hazlewood continuing. Great spell from both the pacers so far.
Top over from Starc. Swing fading away but he has delivered a great over has starc, 2 off it. IND- 12/3 after 5 overs.
First bounday of the innings and it's come off the bat of Rahul. That should ease some pressure at least. IND: 10/3 after 4 overs. 5 coming off that Hazlewood over.
First time that three of India's top four batters in a men's ODI have got out for a duck. Surely not the start to their World Cup campaign they have imagined. But this unit has the depth to still be able to cross the finish line. Can they do it this evening? Let's find out.
3 runs coming off the bat in this over from Starc. All of the bat of Kohli. India- 5/3 after 3 overs.
Suddenly the target 200 seeming way more tougher for India and Indian fans. KL Rahul joins Kohli. Tensed atmoshphere at the Chepauk.
India lose 3 in the first 2 overs. 2 wickets in the same over from Hazlewood as Shreyas Iyer's drive goes straight to Warner at short-cover. IND- 2/3 after 2 overs.
Absolute horror start this for India. Rohit- 0 (6), Kishan- 0 (1) back in the pavilion.
Another one goes down for India. Both openers depart without scoring as Rohit Sharma is out LBW against Hazlewood. India- 2/2 in 1.3 overs.
WICKET! Just the most perfect start for Austaralia. Starc gets rid of Kishan for a duck. It's swinging away and he has edged that to the slips where Green takes a fine catch. 50 World Cup wickets for Starc. IND- 2/1 after 0.4 Overs.
Here we go. 200 to win for India and Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma open the innings against Mitchell Starc, the left-arm seamer.
We will be back with our coverage of India's run-chase and try and bring in every update from Chennai at the earliest. Don't go anywhere and stay on this page at ABP LIVE for fastest IND VS AUS updates.
What an effort from the Indian spin trio in particular. Jadeja, the stand-out performer with figures of 3/28. Kuldeep Yadav scalped 2/42. Ravichandran Ashwin finished with 1/34. Steven Smith- 46 off 71, David Warner- 41 off 52, Marnus Labuschagne- 27 off 41 got starts but it was an invaluable effort from Mitchell Starc who scored 28 off 35 to ensure Australia at least set a target of 200 runs for India. All the bowlers at least had a wicket to his credit for India with Jasprit Bumrah also incredible with figures of 2/35. Mohammed Siraj finished with 1/26 while Hardik Pandya despite being expensive picked 1 for 28. Spinning conditions and it could still be a tight game if Australia get early wickets.
Just under 45 minutes from now when the Indian openers come out to chase 200.
AUstralia are bowled out for 199 as Siraj gets Starc. India need 200 to win their World Cup opener against Australia.
Starc's innings has ensured Australia at least manage to give India a target of 200 runs. He has found a boundary in the last over. He is batting on 28 off 34.
Last over of the innings. Siraj will bowl.
7 coming off the 49th over. Australia 5 away from the 200-run mark. 195/9 after 49 overs.
Josh Hazlewood the last man for Australia. 200 looking difficult for Australia.
And he has taken a wicket. The batter looking to go for the big shot but can't clear mid-off where Virat Kohli takes a fine catch. Zampa goes for 6 off 20 balls. AUS-189/9 after 48.2 overs.
Pandya got hit from a Warner shot and wasn't effective either, going for 21 off his 2. He will, however, bowl the 49th.
5 runs off the 48th over. Australia- 188/8.
Time for Siraj to bowl a spell. He should bowl the 48th and 50th from here. 5 over, none for 17 so far.
A six, wide and a single from that Bumrah's final over. But a great spell. 10 overs 2 for 35 in India's World Cup opener in Chennai.
Second six of the match, much-needed from Australia. Bit on the shorter side there Bumrah and Starc sends it rows back into the crowd on the on side.

A maiden over to finish off from Jadeja. ALmost a wicket with the outside edge going off the keeper's body towards slips but Rohit fails to grab it. AUS- 168/8 after 44 overs.
Jadeja will bowl the final over of his quota now.
A wicket and four runs from the over. Australia-168/8 after 43 Overs.
Adam Zampa the new batter in for Australia.
Bumrah strikes. It is not the easiest to find the boundary off him especially at this stage where is a master at work. Iyer holds a great catch at long on as Cummins departs for 15 off 24. Australia- 165/8 after 42.2 Overs.
Bumrah continuing.
4 leg byes to end it but a great over from Jadeja. Australia- 164/7 after 42 overs.
Time for Jadeja to bowl his 9th.
4 runs coming off the 41st over. Australia- 160/7 after 41 overs.
Australia could be eyeing 200 from here. Will they manage that from here though?
Bumrah is back. The final 10 overs begin. Rohit has the option of 5 fielders protecting the fence but the Indian captain is happy with four at the moment.
And a boundary to finish off Kuldeep's spell. Australia- 156/7 after 40 overs.
Australia don't go down without a fight. There's the first SIX of the match from Cummins.
Kuldeep will finish off here. He is bowling the last over of the second powerplay. After this, there will be an option for an additional fielder outside the circle.
Another economical over from an Indian spinner. That has pretty much been the story this afternoon. 3 off the 39th. Australia- 145/7.

Just 2 off the 38th over. Kuleep has bowled 9 now. Going for 31, picking up 2 wickets. Australia- 142/7 after 38 overs.
Indian spinners are having a party in Chennai at the moment.
It's a wicket-maiden from Ashwin. Australia- 140/7 after 37 overs.
Mitchell Starc the new batter for Australia after Green departed for 8 off 20.
Another Aussie batter back in the pavilion. Green tried to cut it through the off side but it's straight to Pandya at backward point. Australia- 140/7 after 36.2 Overs. Ashwin with his first wicket of the match.
Australia captain Pat Cummins in at number 8. After 36 overs, Australia- 140/6.
WICKET! Kuldeep Yadav gets his man. Glenn Maxwell cleaned up by the left-arm wrist-spinner. Leg stump is uprooted. AUS- 140/6 after 35.5 overs.
Kuldeep from the other end now for India. 200-220 too could be a fighting total in this surface. Remember Maxwell will bowl as well and Marnus Labuschagne will also have to roll his arms over, given the kind of surface this is proving to be.
4 singles off Ashwin's seventh over. After 35 overs, Australia- 138/5.
Ashwin returns for a second spell. 6 overs, none for 24 so far.
Just 3 coming off the 34th over. Australia- 134/5.
Jadeja bowling his 8th over. 34th of the innings.
Just 1 coming off the 33rd over of the innings. Brilliant stuff from Bumrah. Australia- 131/5 after 33 overs.

Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell are out in the middle for Australia. Last recognised batting pair and they have a job to do.
AUS: 123/5 after 31 overs.
Bumrah returns for what could be another short spell, one would think. How great has Rohit Sharma been as a captain this game.
Australia- 119/5 after 30 overs. End of a double-wicket over from Jadeja who has figures of 6 overs, 3 for 18 now.
WICKET! You Miss and I Hit stuff from Jadeja. He is in superb form in Chennai as he sends back Carey for a two-ball duck, out LBW. Australia in Deep trouble. 119/5 after 29.4 Overs.
Alex Carey comes in at number 6 for Australia after Marnus Labuschagne departed for 27 off 41, a knock which had a single boundary.
Australia not only use Labuschagne but also a DRS as The batter tried to go for a sweep against the line and only managed an edge to the keeper KL Rahul. Australia- 119/4 after 29.2 Overs.

After a bit of a break. Spinners it is that continue from both ends as Jadeja is bowling his 5th.
No boundary, 6 coming off that over from Kuldeep. Australia- 110/2 after 27 overs.
Reviews Remaining: Australia - 2 of 2, India - 2 of 2. None used so far actually.
39 balls since the last boundary. Wow, conditions getting tough for batting or Indian bowlers spot on with their line and lengths? Bit of both, we reckon.
As expected, just a 2-over spell from Siraj. Kuldeep returns. 5 overs, 1 for 15 in his first spell.
2 coming off another rapid over from Jadeja. Australia- 104/2 after 26 overs. Run Rate- precisely at 4.00
Jadeja bowling his fourth over.
AUS- 102/2 after 25 overs.
100 Comes Up For Australia in the 25th over.
One would think, pacers will be bowling in short spell especially because of the humidity. For now, Siraj bowling second on the trot in this spell.
Runs coming in singles and doubles at the moment. Jadeja concedes 5. End of over 24. Australia- 98/2.
Meanwhile, it is Jadeja from the other end.
A double and two singles off Siraj's fourth over. Australia- 93/2 after 23 overs. Their current run rate stands at - 4.04. Definitely not looking like a 300 surface so far this 22 yards at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

A super quick over from Jadeja. Just 1 coming off it. After 22 overs, Australia- 89/2.
That concludes another great over from Kuldeep. End of 21 overs, Australia- 88/2.
Kuldeep Yadav continues. He has been exceptional so far. He is bowling his 5th over.
8 runs of the 20th over including first boudary for Australia since the 15th over. That came off the bat of Labuschagne. Australia- 85/2 after 20 overs.
Only Hardik Pandya has leaked runs more than India would have liked, his 2 overs going for 21 runs. No one else till now has conceded over 4 runs an over.
For the first time in this World Cup, here is Ravindra Jadeja into the attack.
Just 1 run off the 19th over. Spinners tightening the screws here for India in their World Cup opener against Australia. AUS- 77/2 after 19 overs.
Kuldeep Yadav, 1 for 11 from 3 overs, continues.
End of another tidy over from Ashwin who concedes two runs off his sixth over. Australia- 76/2 after 18 overs. Steven Smith- 34 off 45 balls. Marnus Labuschagne 1 off 5 balls.
Sixth on the trot for Ashwin then. Probably his last, one would think in this spell.
END OF OVER 17. Australia- 74/2
Marnus Labuschagne the new man in for Australia. He comes after Kuldeep managed to break a 69-run stand. Warner was getting frustrated, with runs slowly getting dried up and eventually fell for 41 off 52, a knock that included six boundaries.

Ashwin, playing his first World Cup match at home, continues after Drinks break. 4 overs, none for 20 so far.
Extremely humid conditions in Chennai. Players can be seen with wet towels around their heads, support staff all-around with fluids in their hands, in case players call for it. Humidity upwards of 70% as per Google Weather and temperatues above 30 Degrees Celsius.
That's a sign of disciplined bowling from India. They haven't conceded a single extra in the first 15 overs.
It's time for Drinks here in Chennai. 5 coming off the 15th over and Australia are 71/1 at this stage. Great phase of play this with both teams having their moments. Australia would be happy with where they are poised at the moment. India would look for a wicket with this partnership looking dangerous. They have added 66 off 76 already.
David Warner- 35 off 39 with the help of 5 boundaries
Steve Smith- 31 off 39 with the help of 5 boundaries
A boundary and three singles coming off the 14th. Australia- 66/1 after 14 overs.
Spinners operating at both ends for the first time as R Ashwin continues.
Half century of the partnership between Smith and Warner has come up already. Great effort from the duo after that early wicket of Marsh. Meanwhile, Kuldeep has slipped in a quick over. 5 singles off it. AUS- 59/1 after 13 overs.
Left-arm leg-spinner Kuldeep Yadav for the first time into the attack this match. He would look to break this partnership. Australia are 54/1 after 12 overs, Kuldeep to bowl the 13th.
Steve Smith came up with another boundary against Hardik Pandya. This time he decided to go over the long-off with the ball racing away towards the boundary line. He hammered another boundary as he pulled the ball towards the deep mid-wicket region. AUS 51/1 (11)
Skipper Rohit Sharma has called Ashwin to bowl against Warner. But then the start was not as good as he got smashed for a boundary by Warner. AUS 43/1 (10)
It does not look like Bumrah has come after a long injury hiatus. He has been bowling wicket to wicket against the Aussies. AUS 36/1 (9)
David Warner welcomed Hardik Pandya by hitting a boundary. Without moving his feet much, he hit it straight and found the boundary rope. Another bad delivery by Pandya and once again it was Warner who punished him with a boundary. Smith also decided to go with the flow, hitting a boundary on the last ball. AUS 29/1 (7)
Another economical over bowled by Siraj. Australian batters are looking clueless against the Indian speedsters. AUS 16/1 (6)
Bumrah has been hitting a body line length to Smith, not giving any room to the batter. Tight over from Bumrah!! AUS 16/1 (5)
Steve Smith is a bus player and he is doing the same as he found the boundary against Siraj. Impeccable placement!! AUS 11/1 (4)
It was a sharp outswinger from Bumrah that Marsh failed to read and ended up edging it to slip cordon. Virat Kohli grabbed a blinder. What a delivery!! AUS 5/1 (2.2)

Players have stepped out in the field for national anthems.
Jasprit Bumrah during pre-match build-up: I am feeling really good. I have been out for a while but now I have been playing for the last two months, feels good to be back and traveling with the team. It feels great to play in a home WC, you don't get to play home WCs but we are the lucky ones. Australia are a very good side, we played them recently, and it is going to be a cracking contest. The feeling is quite relaxed, we have played a lot of cricket recently, when the warm-up games were washed out, the players tried to relax and refresh. Basically the preparation stays the same, try and give your best, try to keep things simple and back your strengths, enjoy the occasion as you don't get to play a lot of WCs. It is starting at 2 o clock, it is going to be a little hot but we are looking forward to it and hopefully things go our way.
India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.
Australia (Playing XI): David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Alex Carey(w), Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa.
"It will be a slowish surface, might be two-paced and just looking at the color, much darker on one side and lighter on the other. I have seen Chennai pitches being harder and flatter, but this will be a little bit on the slower side, if you bowl back of a length and don't give pace then it won't be easy," said Ravi Shastri.
Australia won the toss and opted to bat first.
