IND vs AUS 2nd Test: Here's why the Australian players are wearing black armbands on the field in the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in Adelaide.

Australia are playing India in the second IND vs AUS Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 at Adelaide. While the much-awaited Adelaide’s day-night Test got underway with Indian captain Rohit Sharma winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Australian players were seen wearing black armbands on their shirt sleeves as they came out for the national anthems on December 6 (Friday).

The Australian team is wearing black armbands to honor the 10th anniversary of Phillip Hughes' death and to pay tribute to former Australia opener Ian Redpath, who passed away recently on Sunday, December 1.

Australian Players Pay Tribute To Phil Hughes & Ian Redpath

Phil Hughes, the left-handed Australian batter, tragically passed away on November 27, 2014, after sustaining a fatal head injury during a Sheffield Shield match. Although Hughes died on November 27, Cricket Australia has organized a series of events to commemorate his death anniversary, coinciding with the ongoing IND vs AUS 2nd Test. The black armband worn by the Australian team is another gesture to honor the cricketer, who passed away at the age of 25.

Hughes played 26 Tests, 25 ODIs and a T20I for Australia.

On the other hand, Ian Redpath passed away at the age of 83. He had an international career spanning from 1964 to 1976, during which he played 66 Tests and five ODIs. He was an integral part of Australia's Test team during the 1960s and 1970s. Redpath accumulated 4,737 Test runs at an average of 43.45. In first-class cricket, he scored 14,993 runs from 226 matches, with an average of nearly 42, and also took 13 first-class wickets.

Coming to the ongoing IND vs AUS day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval, India won the toss and opted to bat first and dealt with an early blow as Australia’s Mitchell Starc dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal for a golden duck, taking a wicket on the very first ball of the Test. India batters Shubman Gill and KL Rahul formed a good-looking 69-run partnership before Rahul too was dismissed by Starc.

Australia grabbed another two quick wickets getting rid of Virat Kohli and then Gill to reduce India to 82-4 at Tea.
