ICC New Rule At T20 World Cup 2024: The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 is all set to get underway in the United States of America (USA) and the Caribbean Islands with the first match of the competition set to be played between co-hosts USA and Canada at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on June 1 (June 2 as per the Indian Standard Time). While cricket fans are looking forward to the competition, there is a brand new rule that will be introduced for the very first time with the onset of the competition.
Among many other firsts, this will be the first ICC competition that will see the implementation of the new 60-second stop-clock rule. The law has already been implemented on an interim basis since December 2023 but from June onwards every international limited-overs match will be governed with this rule.

Stop-Clock Rule Brought In For Timely Completion Of Matches
Notably, the rule has been brought in for the timely completion of cricket matches. The new rule requies the fielding team to start the next over within 60 seconds of finishing one over. The stop clock will be started by the third umpire and will be displayed on the giant screen installed at the stadiums. In case, the the fielding team does not manage to start the over on time, they will be given two warnings before a five-run penalty is imposed on them.

In the matches in which this rule was trialled, an average of 20 minutes were saved which has led to it getting a green-signal for all limited-overs fixtures. However, there are exceptions to the rule. In case of a new batter coming in to bat, an official drinks break called by the umpires, treatement of an injury sustained by a player on the field and has been approved by the umpires or any condition which is beyond the control of the fielding team.
