Australia’s veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon had topsy-turvy Ashes 2023 series giant England. Lyon was in brilliant form in the first game of the series as he took eight wickets for the Aussies but then he suffered a calf injury in the second Test of the series. His injury proved to be serious as he was ruled out from the entire series and young Todd Murphy had to fill in for him. Despite going through a tough time, the 35-year-old player is looking forward to making a comeback for the Ashes in 2027.
Notably, Lyon will be 39 years old in 2027 and but still, he is hopeful to take part in the series.
"I tell you one thing, I’m definitely not joking about going back to (the) Ashes, I feel like having this injury, coming home, and watching the guys play the three Test matches has really driven me to get back there and make sure I’m back playing cricket," Nathan Lyon told SEN’s The Run Home.
Add to it, Nathan disclosed that in his injury layoff has helped him relax and set new goals for himself. Though he is no longer a young spinner, he still feels that a lot of wickets left in him and that he can offer a lot to the national team.
"My hunger for the game has probably gone to a new level, this has allowed me to have a little bit more time off during my rehab, sit back, reflect, reset some goals, and find a really decent purpose for me," Lyon said.
"I’m definitely not writing off going back to England for the Ashes—the finish line for me hasn’t even popped up in my eyesight yet, I’ve still got a lot of cricket left in me in my eyes and a lot to offer the Renegades, New South Wales cricket, but also Australia," he concluded.
Earlier, Ben Stokes led the team to end the Ashes 2023 series on 2-2 against Australia.
