After announcing his retirement from all form of cricket in December 2018, former opener Gautam Gambhir began a new innings on India political turf. The ex-Indian cricketer officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Arun Jaitley welcomed Gambhir, terming it a 'significant induction'.

In addition to tweets, videos on cricket, road-shows and promoting campaigns for 2019 General elections, BJP's candidate for East Delhi, Gautam Gambhir has now officially joined the Chowkidar Twitter club.

The 37-year-old, who is a resident of Rajendra Nagar joined BJP on March 22 and has then said,” "I have been influenced by the PM, his vision for the country. This is a fabulous platform for me to do something for the country.”

Gambhir has used hashtags like #PhirEkBaarModiSarkar and #GambhirForEastDelhi to display videos and photos of his roadshows across Delhi.

"I was a cricketer, I am not a cricketer [anymore]. I did what I had to do on the cricket field, it's a different field and it's a different challenge... I have always had the right intention to do something good for the country and change a lot of things in the society and hopefully I touch a lot of lives. So I hope I can live up to the expectations,” said Gambhir during his East Delhi election rally.
